Fallible Logic of Food System

Carina Ayden  is one of the most inspiring female founders working in food tech. Not only does she care about the customers, her product is created to set new rules to the entire food production system.  We decided to talk to Carina about her perspective on the current system of food supplies.

As for you, what is the biggest challenge in today’s food system? How can it be changed?

Food industry is a very complex and fragmented system. It consists of many parts that are broken and many of these parts operate based on an old principle “business-as-usual”. So when you put all these parts together, you get the system we have today: inefficient, fragile and unjust.

To better understand the brokenness of the food system we need to look at the numbers that reveal illogical dispositions:

  • There are 820 Million people that suffer from hunger while food waste equates to one-third of all food produced globally. 
  • In U.S. 40% of food ends up in trash bins while every 1 in 6 children goes to bed hungry.

These numbers reveal that brokenness fuels injustice.

There is fallible logic in the way we distribute the land and the calories it produces:

  • Only 23% of all arable land is dedicated for human crop production.
  • Most of the land is used to feed the farm animals. This logic doesn’t stack up against the needs of the world: meat and dairy account for only 18% of global calories and 37% of the global protein supply.

Yet land used for crops totals 82% of the global calorie supply and 67% of protein comes from plant-based foods.

All these calories that are lost by feeding crops to animals could feed an extra 3.5 billion people.

Let’s not forget that animals are living beings and are highly resource-intensive that require large amounts of water, land and energy outputs.

Another example of injustice is that the world grows enough calories to feed up to 10 billion people already today but a large portion of them is being diverted and redistributed for livestock.

How do you navigate these challenges?

As a product focused brand, we chose to focus on resilience when it comes to our ingredients and our supply chain. We replace traditional mono-crops with more sustainable plants like pulses. Besides that we inch closer to the model we believe will be the only food model that could sustain the growing population — regenerative, sustainable and circular.

Are there any ways to improve the current situation?

Complex, multi-level problems require systems solutions. We need to forge collaboration between a multitude of sectors: from policy makers, retailers to farmers and businesses to rethink the current model.

I don’t believe in a centralized food system that fuels monopoly and in turn injustice. I think decentralization is the solution that would introduce resilience into the food system, fuel farmers that have been swallowed by conglomerates that dictate the prices. The government would be incentivized to divert the money not to a small group of conglomerates powered by relentless lobbyists, but to a more diverse agricultural sector that operates under the principles of public health and ecological balance.

Do you see technology as a solution to some of these challenges?

I see an amalgamation of humans and technology as a big driver to tacking big challenges. There are a few agricultural startups that use machine learning and robotics to tackle the way we grow our food. Most of them focus on increasing the efficiency and minimization of fertilizer use. This is a big leap in the agricultural sector. Blockchain technology introduced transparency to the supply chain. Cell agriculture, although in its nascency, is the future of cruelty-free clean meat.

In my company we are diverting from using ingredients that are resource intensive to a more drought-tolerant, soil healthy crops.

Do you think the production cycle is better in Europe than in the US? Overall, in your opinion, what country has the best approach to food production?

Sweden, Austria and Finland are the countries that are scoring higher on the Sustainability Index for the way they manage food waste and address nutritional challenges. I don’t think there’s one country today which we can use as a blueprint yet.

How do you see the future of humanity in terms of food production? 

We are intristically connected to this “pale blue dot”, to this beautiful fragile ecological system which allows us to live and to thrive. We are intristically connected to nature. So our Earth bound activities have to become 100% circular and sustainable.

 

ChatGPT; Helpful Tool or Serious Breach of Privacy?

ChatGPT, the chatbot powered by artificial intelligence, is surging in popularity and causing a stir across the world in its abilities to write, create, code, and mimic a craft using data pulled from the internet. AI has been around since the 1950’s, yet it is gaining recent popularity due to the massive amounts of available data, more efficient computers, and higher amounts of storage. It can be a helpful tool, providing services that once took several hours of effort and now compiling it into a few seconds with adequate results. Although an impressive form of technology representative of the digital age, is ChatGPT the modern entrepreneur’s dream come true, or a nightmare? ChatGPT in particular is concerning due to its ability to breach privacy laws, create malware to spy on others’ data, or share incorrect information.

Jodi Daniels, owner of Red Clover Advisors and expert in the field of data privacy conservation shares her concern about the data being used by AI and where it’s coming from. “No one asked if the data was allowed to be used. It just scrapes it unbeknownst to the individual.” The creations of ChatGPT are not being created out of nothing; rather taken from someone else’s data. This “bot” does not discriminate, and there is no way to direct it from where to take or tell it not to take from somewhere else. Jodi shares “Right now, there are no individual rights.  A person cannot ask gpt to see the data it has or ask for it to be deleted.  – which is a requirement under many privacy laws including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).” GDPR is considered the gold standard of privacy laws providing privacy and human rights. ChatGPT bypasses this law and can put many businesses at risk.

Access to Personal Information

In order to sign up for an account using ChatGPT, one has to provide a phone number and email address. Anything the user plugs into their ChatGPT will be programmed to be associated with that email and phone number. It can also view associated social media pages, creating a database of information that could reveal to others private and personal information about that account holder, simply due to the fact that they created an account and began to play around with its program. “When people use gpt and ask it questions or provide information for it to function, it’s giving data to feed the algorithm and that could be sensitive information that was just shared or it might be used in ways that weren’t anticipated. This is also important for companies who might be sharing client or company confidential information to a third party that will use that data for other purposes.”

Potential for Fraudulent Activity

This alarming breach of privacy can be used as a weapon for many ill-meaning individuals. Daniels shares, “Security risks exist too – fraudsters can use the information to send phishing campaigns and use it for business email compromises.” Spam is already an issue. We are harassed daily with calls, emails, and messages. How many of these are from AI, ChatGPT, or stolen data? It’s important for everyone to remember that Artificial Intelligence does not replace the human mind; the idea may be helpful and impressive, but is also flawed and can wreak havoc in our modern digital world.

Ozzie knows from experience that the 24oz gloves typically used for conditioning were massive, which made it hard for boxers to perfect the precise movements of champion fighters. This is why the company created Dr-T (aka “Dart”) Tech for both its 24oz and 16 oz gloves — a proprietary, all-day padding that enhances the glove’s feedback and protection without adding unnecessary bulk and girth. 

“Dr-T is a technique to make multilayers without bulking up,” Ozzie explains. “Dart padding is smaller and more compact than punchers’ gloves but also protective. Punchers’ gloves are small and hurts the opponent but damages the knuckles. We brought greater protection to these more compact 16oz gloves, but our 24oz gloves are totally different story.” 

According to Ozzie, Mayweather Promotions fighter Jalil Hackett was using a regular 24oz glove. When Ozzie asked him why he was using that “watermelon-sized glove,” Hackett replied, “for conditioning due to heavier weight.” 

“But he wasn’t able to hit the [punching] bag or mitts properly because his gloves were so big,” Ozzie clarifies. “That gave me an idea to make a weighted dart padding which ultimately became our innovative Dr-T padding technology using heavier padding but in the same size of the padding we use in 16oz gloves. After 6 months of trial and error, we were able to make our 24oz gloves the same size of regular 16oz ones.

This padding innovation has made the HIT N MOVE® gloves the most comfortable and durable training gloves on the market.

Blogger Kids are a Game, a Simple Hobby, or a Real Profession?

Hi Diana! Were you on board with the idea of your kids becoming bloggers from the start? Were you ready to become the stars of Ivan and Maria’s content?  

Hi there! At first, we didn’t understand how it all worked, but of course we supported the idea. We started watching videos on this topic and reading articles to immerse ourselves in this corner of social media. At the time, it was difficult to grasp. We watched other popular children’s channels that involved both adults and children. We realized that by building these channels, you can also earn money. It’s not just an interesting pastime, but also a unique business. We thought it was a great way to earn money and spend quality time with our children, since our work schedules didn’t allow for much of that. So, after weighing the pros and cons, we decided to give it a shot.. 

How old were your children when you started posting? 

We started our account in September 2015. At that time, our family consisted of four people. My husband and I, and Maria and Ivan. Maria was 2.7 years old at the time, and Ivan was 4 years old. Now, we are a much larger family, and all five children participate in our videos – Alex, Dasha, Stephi, Maria and Ivan.  

Please tell us how Maria and Ivan felt on the first shoot at such a young age? 

We shot only on weekends, because there was no free time on weekdays. We started out buying toys and opening them up on video. At first, the children did not quite understand what was required of them. After all, it’s one thing to watch these videos for fun, and it’s another to directly participate in them. We filmed three videos a day, so they had plenty of new toys to play with and enjoy. The kids were a little shy and uncertain at first, but they were, of course, excited about the new toys we bought for each video. Over time, they got more comfortable and confident in front of the camera. Not only did they receive their beloved toys, but they also got to spend precious time with their parents. 

What advice would you give on creating a comfortable atmosphere for children while you shoot? 

My husband and I are always trying to create the most comfortable, natural conditions on the set so that the children are genuinely interested. Now, our film crew and screenwriters are all doing this as well. The crew’s job involves setting up the scene and preparing the kids for filming. They also have to keep the kids’ attention and involvement by making it a game for them, after all they are the main characters. Often our scenes don’t go according to the script. We give our children the opportunity to improvise and continue the story themselves. When this happens, we put the script aside and watch the process. If we notice that they are struggling with this at all, we’ll help out a little. When working with kids, you should always ask if they are interested in what they’re doing and if they want to do it. If they do, then they should get involved with the process as much as possible. They will see it as a game and will be happy to participate in the filming. 

Have there ever been situations when your children burned out from filming? 

No, not really. We only film twice a week, so they have plenty of time for other activities like school, sports, and hobbies.This is what takes up the bulk of their daily lives. Plus, they still see filming as a fun pastime after all these years. In addition, filming has helped the children to build confidence and be more open. It has benefited all other areas of their life.

What is your relationship with competitors? How do you feel about the fact that some bloggers reshoot your ideas? 

There will always be competitors, but it’s important to not take things to a negative extreme. We haven’t had any issues with this really. We communicate and exchange ideas with other family bloggers, and our kids are even friends with some of them. I also don’t think that anyone can fully copy an idea, each time an idea is reused, someone adds their own flair to it. We’re not bothered by others reusing our ideas; in fact, it can even work to our advantage. It helps our videos get more visibility when they appear as similar content.

What distinguishes you from other similar children’s channels? 

The main thing that sets us apart from other channels is our cast, the five children. This gives us the chance to work with five different characters in the videos. Thanks to this, we are able to shoot videos on a variety of topics. Another thing that makes us unique is that we can build any props that we need in a very short time. A van, a three-story house, a plane – whatever we need, it will be ready on time. We owe this to our prop team who we are very grateful for. They are a full time part of our staff. I think this is what fundamentally distinguishes us from all other channels and gives us an advantage. 

What are you doing to keep the audience’s interest in your channel? 

In the first ten seconds we try to interest the audience as much as possible, otherwise we will lose them. Therefore, all five children must be present in the initial frame. In the following frames, each child introduces themself. Our experience has shown that when five bright and positive children do their job, the viewer continues watching. Also, at the beginning of the video, we definitely focus on the trend / challenge that is popular at the moment. Since we have been shooting videos for a very long time, we have a good idea of what our audience likes and we always take it into account on the set. 

So, Diana, what’s the secret behind your family’s success and 20 million subscribers?

Well, for starters, we always stay on top of trends and never miss a beat. Keeping up with what’s popular has helped us keep moving forward and gain popularity in the children’s space. Discipline is key too, since filming is a time-consuming and demanding process. It’s important that everyone knows their role and what they’re contributing to the bigger picture. And, of course, having a strong team is crucial – it’s hard to do all this on your own. Everyone from the screenwriter to the prop person to the film crew plays a significant part. When my husband and I had to handle all these roles ourselves, it was a lot tougher. To achieve what we have, you need to not only be passionate about your work but also make sure you have all the resources necessary to turn your ideas into reality.

Sashank Venkatesh, better known as Noxigen, is a multi-talented musician, producer, and composer who has made a name for himself in both the music and film industry.
