The next crisis a business has to face might not be a pandemic, but these lessons learned can apply and can help a business navigate the rough waters.

As humans, we have three responses to fear- fight, flight, and freeze. Those that froze in the face of the Covid-19 shutdowns had a tough time. As the whole world shut down and went on lockdown in 2020, some businesses obeyed the orders to shut their doors, and then they froze. They didn’t do anything else except wait to see what came next. This inaction would prove to be their downfall. As the lockdowns wore on, way past the original “two weeks to slow the spread,” it became glaringly obvious businesses couldn’t just freeze and wait it out anymore.

Some business owners took a drastic next step and started cutting costs everywhere. Especially evident in marketing departments, massive cuts happened everywhere. Advertising by some companies came to an abrupt halt. These major cuts led to major problems down the road. The philosophy was “no money in, no money out.” But people still needed goods and services. There was still money to be made; companies just had to figure out how to administer their products in a vastly different landscape than just a month before. 

Much like the companies that froze, some companies didn’t make the necessary changes. This refusal to innovate hindered every company that chose this option. It was becoming increasingly clear that the world was not going to return to normal any time soon. To survive, a company needed to figure out how it could keep serving the public, even as the public was on lockdown in their homes. 

Plans needed to be made, both for the short term and the long term. Business was not going to be “business as usual .”Every business needed to come up with a way to get through the week, the month, and then hopefully, the year. There needed to be plans in place for how to get through each increment of time as the pandemic marched on. There needed to be a plan for how to proceed once things started to get back to normal. It was hard to predict when it would happen, but the world couldn’t stay locked down forever. Even though the plans would change time and time again, businesses needed to have some sort of direction if they wanted to stay afloat. The businesses that didn’t plan out anything were at the mercy of the lockdowns and regulations, which were not going to favor them.

As things changed, businesses needed to be in communication with their team, constantly. To keep moving forward, every part of the business needed to be on the same page. This was hard to do, as there were no in-person meetings. Email was a difficult way to have conversations and keep everyone on the same page. Company communication never required so much effort, but those that didn’t make the effort had many communication breakdowns. These breakdowns made it even harder for a business to survive. 

It seemed like things went from bad to worse almost weekly for businesses that weren’t adapting to the “new normal” the pandemic produced. There was a silver lining, though. There were businesses that were changing and innovating everything. From the way they advertised to the way they delivered their goods and services, businesses that were making changes were going to come out on top of the pandemic.  

How to Avoid Making These Mistakes in the Future

The biggest lesson learned from every company was about rigidity in their business. In order to survive the lockdown and everything that came with the pandemic, every business had to pivot and change. This meant changing everything, from marketing to how their product or service was delivered to their customers. The companies that held off on changes of any kind were the ones who were soon left behind as their competitors started innovating and evolving. Any company that was rigid wasn’t going to weather this storm.

To grow and change, many businesses had to get creative. This couldn’t be up to only the decision-makers of the company. Companies needed to listen to their employees and their ideas. Open lines of communication were essential. Virtual meetings and virtual one-on-ones reconnected the associates who were physically separated from each other. As communication grew and flourished, so did ideas of how to change. Business owners turned to their employees to find ways to change and better serve their customers. The old saying is a necessity is the mother of invention, and customers needed businesses in new ways. All members of the team were now needed for a business to roll with the punches Covid-19 kept throwing. 

Companies that were making it through the pandemic were making plans all along the way. With each change, there was a new way for the company to embrace the change and innovate. Plans were made for both the immediate future, with the ever-changing rules and regulations, and for the long term. These plans gave business owners and employees alike a direction. Customers began to see what companies were still there for them and in what capacity.  

As some companies were making drastic cuts to their marketing, others were using their marketing as an opportunity. They were comforting their customers, letting them know their company was still there to serve their customers. While their product or service might look a little different, these companies were doing everything within their power to be there for their customers. With everyone home more, digital advertising exploded. Businesses needed their customers to know how they were faring, and that they were there. Everyone was online more, and online ordering was the face of what was going to be the new normal. No matter what product or service a company offered, the ones that figured out how to go online with it and its marketing were the ones that made money.

Every company needed to innovate. Their product or service had to have an online element. Web pages and digital ads were more important now than ever. Innovation and staying ahead of competitors were what made businesses successful in one of the most trying times the world has ever known. Companies that figured out how to change and how to be there for their customers were getting clicks and were making money. Those that didn’t innovate and change were stuck and were in real danger of becoming Covid-19 casualties.  

The big takeaway from the Covid-19 pandemic was that companies need to communicate, be flexible, and above all, be innovative. Those companies that did just that during the pandemic emerged successful. Not only did they weather the storm, but they came out with some incredible benefits.  

Not only surviving but thriving in the face of the pandemic gave many companies confidence. They gained the confidence to change and evolve. They gained the confidence to be bold. The financial market is one of the world’s most complicated mysteries, and for centuries, many scholars have attempted to explain it in various ways. Conventional financial theory is more mathematical in nature, but several innovators in the field have challenged these guiding principles and proposed alternative perspectives on portfolio optimization. 

One such financial provocateur is Dr. Richard Michaud, published author and the CEO of New Frontier Advisors.

Finance’s Wrong Turns

Dr. Michaud has just released his new book, “Finance’s Wrong Turns: A New Foundation for Financial Markets and Social Science.” In the book, he analyzes what the finance industry has gotten right and what needs improvement by evaluating the sociological principles that dictate investor behavior. Over his more than five decades of experience as an asset manager, Dr. Michaud has come to a keen understanding of the core behaviors of financial markets and how analysts, advisors, and portfolio managers can use these new and improved strategies on behalf of their clients.

As it stands, the finance industry is heavily based on a mathematical approach centered around concepts and theories that have been around for decades. However, this quantitative asset management style has significant limitations that Dr. Michaud points out in his book. Portfolio optimization aims to understand how people make rational decisions under uncertainty, but according to Dr. Michaud, explaining these decisions in mathematical terms is futile. Instead, economists should look at these decisions as they are made from a sociological perspective.

Reapproaching the idea of value

“Fundamentally, the central pillar of the finance industry is the idea of value; however, one of the gravest mistakes that the financial sector has made is thinking about value incorrectly,” Dr. Michaud asserts. “Value doesn’t come from a series of mathematical axioms, but the preferences associated with them. Although understanding those axioms can be important, time has shown that they alone are not effective in determining portfolio value and optimizing portfolio performance.”

Dr. Michaud begins the book by taking the reader through a brief history of the different financial theories that have dictated portfolio optimization for decades before evaluating the method that has unfortunately been forgotten: Markowitz MV optimization. Although Dr. Michaud points out some critical flaws in Markowitz’s theory, he uses it as the foundation for his revolutionary new approach to asset management and portfolio optimization.

Markowitz’s approach — as well as Dr. Michaud’s — is based on a more social sciences-oriented approach to financial markets. Markowitz and Dr. Michaud both heavily emphasize the importance of social preference theory when analyzing financial markets. In other words, it’s not just individual opinions and preferences that dictate market movement but group and societal understandings.

Social preference theory in the financial market

Dr. Michaud asserts that a social sciences-based approach is not as novel as it may seem — the economists who have proposed similar approaches for decades have been mainly ignored. He points to a theory proposed by John Maynard Keynes that compares financial markets to a beauty contest. 

“In Keynes’s theory, judges in a beauty contest were rewarded more for selecting the most popular face, rather than the one to their own preferences,” explains Dr. Michaud. “In terms of financial markets, that means that it isn’t about what the individual thinks is a good stock, but what the market controllers think is a good stock, having a profound ripple effect.”

In his book, Dr. Michaud suggests looking at the stock market as one would a social group, as social groups tend to act differently than the individuals inside of them. However, social groups are also highly volatile and fragile — one single piece of information can fundamentally change the social group’s behavior. As such, it is crucial to understand that portfolio optimization does not involve understanding the behavior of individuals, which would be addressed by the current mathematical models of the financial market, but the group’s behavior.

How technology has enabled a new paradigm in financial theory

Ultimately, a key component of the issue regarding the finance industry today is that it is based on a cycle of outdated axioms. “Back when people like Sharpe introduced these theories, the technology was extremely limited and has since become outdated,” Dr. Michaud explains. “However, modern technology is now based on the theories of these scholars who worked with outdated technology. As such, correcting these errors in finance involves us going back to basics and re-evaluating what we know through an entirely different lens.”

Still, Dr. Michaud and his team at New Frontier Advisors have been able to develop patented technology using their guiding principle of the Michaud Efficient Frontier, which he explains extensively in the book. With this innovative new framework and technology, Dr. Michaud hopes to inspire other thinkers in the financial space not to limit their perspectives to those traditionally accepted by the industry — as this will only limit their capabilities to optimize portfolios efficiently.

Bestselling Author Brett Andrew Strange Talks About His Latest Book Beneath the Purple Dawn

Brett Andrew Strange is the author of two novels, Beneath the Purple Dawn and Against the Dusk, as well as Encounters: Six Short Stories. Though he currently calls San Francisco home, he has traveled extensively in the past and formerly resided in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Strange has also applied travel into his character and event development as he is working on his novels. He has visited well over two dozen countries to complete research for his writing and it truly shows when you open one of his novels and begin to read it. 

We were elated to be able to talk with Strange recently where he discussed his writing.

What books did you grow up reading? Did these inspire you to become an author?

I grew up primarily with the modern twentieth century classics – Hemingway and Fitzgerald, for example. I also consumed many Russian authors, such as Tolstoy and Bulgakov, and European authors, Maupassant, Mann, and Camus.  Joseph Conrad was a favorite early explorer of global themes. Conrad developed a darker, multi-layered, existential writing style that was truly innovative.  Conrad also conveyed a sense of foreign place like no other modern writer in English.  

What was your inspiration behind the development of the Paul Drake Thrillers Series?

My inspiration was my time at the Central Intelligence Agency and my subsequent life and work in the far-flung locations portrayed in my writing.  My novels, while fictional, are derived from real people I encountered and operational situations.  Fiction is simply the most effective and entertaining way to communicate the underlying essence of these experiences—sacrifice, deception, loyalty, and heroic action.  I’m not a fan of thriller fiction that is based on fantasy or derived from stale Hollywood formulas. In contrast, I want my writing to stay grounded in actual tradecraft and the most relevant political issues of our time, even if such an approach is more unsettling and nuanced.   I also wanted to thread together a compelling, rather spiritual love story that would resonates beyond the espionage plot and take the story to a higher emotional and universal level. 

Are there any parts of the first draft that didn’t make it into the final copy?

Yes, there are areas which were simplified to deliver a crisp reading experience.  I value my reader’s time.  Intelligent readers bring their own imaginations to make assumptions without the need for excessive explanation.  This tighter approach also mirrors life.  Life is never completely explained, nor should art be. For example, the first book’s title, Against the Dusk, is the title of a certain painting that first draws Paul and Katya together.  More details on this painting as view differently by many of the characters are best left to the reader’s imagination. 

I’m thankful for the input of Webster Stone, who helped enhance the cinematic aspect of certain scenes given to his experience with writing movie scripts, and to Alex Hoeffler for helping to dramatize the audio version.  Alex’s voice renditions of the characters really captured the novel’s mood and tempo for both books.  I hope my readers will consider listening to this stellar audio version! 

If you could spend a day with another popular author, who would it be and why?

I’ll go with Joseph Conrad, who lived an incredible life and was a master stylist in a language that was not even his native tongue. Conrad’s techniques shaped modern fiction. I would be fascinated to know more about his unique mind, and also the era when he lived. 

What is the most valuable piece of advice you have been given about writing?

Write clearly and precisely on important subjects that you know well from experience. My goal is to use words precisely so the reader can see, hear, taste, and hopefully feel what Paul and Katya experience.  To quote Tolstoy directly: “A real work of art destroys, in the consciousness of the receiver, the separation between himself and the artist.” Just achieving some small sliver of this goal, is a great achievement for any author.
