Eradicating the Stigma of Mental Illness with Suicide Survivor and Best-selling Author Clint Malarchuk

After surviving three near-fatal tragedies, the mental health advocate says it’s OK to seek help and treatment for mental illness

To fight against the stigma of mental illness, the best weapon that NHL veteran Clint Malarchuk can use on the battlefield is himself. For nearly two decades, he unknowingly suffered Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after an accident severed his jugular vein during a match in 1989. A miracle awarded him a second chance in life, which he spent nurturing his career and earning the nickname Cowboy Goalie. Although many years passed after the freak accident, his undiagnosed PTSD, fueled by depression and alcohol, led him to a suicide attempt that almost cost his life. After intensive treatment and spending six more months living in a treatment center, Clint saw his third chance in life and vowed to live it differently. This time, it’s about becoming a beacon of newfound hope for others struggling with mental illness.

To understand his life story on a deeper level, Clint worked with journalist Dan Robson and bared his truth in a book, The Crazy Game: How I Survived in the Crease and Beyond, released in Canada. He published the same book in the U.S. but with a different title, A Matter of Inches: How I Survived in the Crease and Beyond, which served as an eye-opener on mental health issues and the stigma surrounding them. In 2020, nearly one in five adults in the United States struggled with various mental illnesses. Clint was no stranger to hardships while battling depression and anxiety as someone who went through this ordeal. Fortunately, he overcame the darkest moments in his life with the intervention of people who wanted to help him, including his wife, Joanie.

Now a mental health advocate and renowned motivational speaker at conferences and events, Clint is on a mission to break the stigma that continues to affect millions of lives worldwide. He is collaborating with ZavoMedia Group, a digital branding and public relations agency based in NYC, and a staunch supporter of Clint’s vision of spreading awareness on mental health and improving lives. In this interview, he reveals how he conquered his struggles and shares his insight on what businesses can do to make workers feel safe, understood, valued and heard even in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Thank you for having us! What were the biggest challenges you’ve faced and how did you overcome them?

“Playing goal in the high-pressure NHL industry with an undiagnosed severe PTSD for many years took a toll on my well-being; I was like a ticking time bomb that could go off anytime and it took a suicide attempt just to get the help I needed. That shouldn’t be the case for everyone. Lives are lost daily because of mental illness and we need to do something about that.

Living in the treatment center was tough, but I did it one day at a time. Growing up with an abusive alcoholic father was terrible and affected my upbringing. When I was a kid, I had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, anxiety and depression and stayed at the hospital for two months.

To this day, I’m still dealing with my own issues because I’ve learned that PTSD will never go away. But it doesn’t mean everything is hopeless. We all deserve another chance to work and improve ourselves. I’m at the end of an 18-month program for military veterans and first responders. I’ve learned a lot and gained some efficient tools to manage better.”

What wisdom would you want to share with others? What lessons can people learn from you?

“People think they’re all alone in this challenging situation and nobody can relate to what they’re going through. They believe they’re the only ones suffering, but they’re not. Because of the stigma, most people are afraid of asking for help. I want to erase that fear and tell them it’s OK to seek help; nobody should feel guilty or ashamed to ask for help. I’ve been to the darkest of dark, suffering in silence, but I persevered because I knew there were people who loved and supported me even on my worst days.

I realized that there are so many of us suffering. I want people to know that they’re not alone. With pandemic-related issues involved in the picture, numbers show that more people are struggling and suffering. We need to support one another rather than tear each other apart.”

The pandemic seemed to keep on disrupting the economy. What should businesses focus on in 2022? What advice would you share?

“I believe that mental health issues are more prevalent than ever and companies need to be more proactive in helping their employees. They must be diligent in helping their people with emotional distress and mental health. Even though people nowadays are more receptive to dealing with mental struggles and more open to getting help, businesses should also take the initiative to offer support rather than wait for the worst scenarios to happen. Most importantly, leaders need to be accountable for their decisions and realize that they have the power to change and influence lives through good leadership.”

Clint Malarchuk’s powerful story continues to impact thousands of lives globally because many people can relate to the battles he has faced and conquered. His passion for helping others persevere through tough times and overcome adversities became his platform, which he has no plans to stop anytime soon. He is currently the VP for The Ranch Teammates for life, which is connected with The Eagles Healing Nest, a facility that helps veterans and athletes with mental issues and addiction.

Learn Why Brooke Watton is One Of The Most Trusted Residential Realtors In Phoenix, AZ

Brooke Watton is an American real estate professional and licensed attorney based out of Phoenix, Arizona. In addition, Brooke has an MBA degree with an emphasis in finance.  Brooke is in her first year as a real estate agent but has spent over a decade as a lawyer working with corporate transactional law and commercial litigation, focusing heavily on real estate. An in-depth understanding of contracts and the inner workings of the law are vital for a good realtor, so Watton’s experience in the legal field is a serious leg-up on the competition. Brooke made her debut in the real estate industry in early 2022 but has already solidified herself as a successful agent.

Getting Into The Industry

Despite Brooke’s background as a lawyer, real estate is in her blood and she comes from a long line of realtors. Her father’s and grandfather’s past success in the industry played a big factor in her career change as Watton looked to carry on her family’s legacy. Another big reason is her love for working with people. Brooke got her start in real estate with Homesmart Acadia and rapidly proved herself as a knowledgeable and trustworthy agent. There are over 7,000 real estate agents that work with Homesmart in the Phoenix area, and Watton was distinguished by the brokerage to be placed in the Homesmart Elite Group that has just over 400 agents. This was due to her experience as a lawyer and ability to quickly perform in real estate.

Going Above And Beyond

A big factor in Brooke’s early success is her attention to detail, friendly demeanor, and willingness to go the extra mile for her clients. One of the things that Watton didn’t like about being a lawyer was having an hourly rate. This could make interactions with clients very transactional and make it harder to offer personal service and a great experience. With real estate you are compensated for your work by doing a good job and closing a deal. This change allows Brooke to truly enjoy her interactions with clients since there is no hourly rate pressuring them. This proved to be worthwhile because she regularly gets referrals from previous clients and her wide net of personal contacts.

Continuing To Grow

Watton is coming up on her first year in the industry and has shown no signs of slowing down since she got started. Moving forward, Brooke wants to continue growing as an agent and taking on more business in the Phoenix area. She wants to keep working with Homesmart as the brokerage provides useful resources and education. 2022 has been an excellent introduction to the industry and Watton is looking forward to the future. Real estate is a huge part of Brooke’s family and she is happy to be setting an example for her children.

Alkaline Water is an IT Drink – What is all the hype about?

The advocacy for alkaline water is on the rise. When frequenting our supermarkets, it can not go unnoticed how more and more brands are popping up in this competitive market. The health-conscious New Yorker immediately embraced this trend and responded with a healthier, more environmentally-sustainable option.

Alkaline water boosts electrolytes during intensive perspiration and regulates the body’s PH level, thereby neutralizing acidic components in the bloodstream.

“It also hydrates you much faster,” says Carsten Pfau, CEO of Agri-Terra. Pfau, an agriculture expert with deep knowledge of food and nutrition, is a frequent consumer of alkaline water.

The aspect of fast hydration can be very beneficial for people who work out daily and require more significant amounts of water to stay perfectly hydrated. Scientifically speaking, the water molecules in alkaline water are smaller and more readily absorbed by the cells in our body, which helps to rehydrate quickly. Pfau, the food and agriculture expert, also looks closely at the different types of alkaline waters.

“There are those waters that are artificially processed into alkaline ones, and then there are those, like our water, Nyne. It’s named after its ph level of 9. It is naturally alkaline, with the water originating from one of the largest underground freshwater reservoirs on the planets, the Guarani Aquifer in Paraguay .” The naturally-occurring, well-balanced mineral content and the taste of natural alkaline water like Nyne are what attracts many customers.

But Alkaline water has more to offer, like a variety of potent antioxidants. Antioxidants can help prevent cell growth damaging free radicals in the body, which is critical since free radicals can not only negatively impact our immune system but also further speed up the aging process. Natural alkaline water also contains a number of minerals like magnesium and calcium, which are essential for maintaining healthy bones.

Other people have opted for alkaline water as part of a less acidic diet to combat the strong discomfort resulting from acid reflux.

So when you see the Hollywood glitterati sporting their Alkaline Water bottle, know there is much more to it than just following the latest food hype.

Here’s How Far Electric Cars Have Come Over the Years

Here’s How Far Electric Cars Have Come Over the Years

Once a rarity, electric cars are becoming increasingly common on American roads. You’ve probably spotted a swanky Tesla equipped with a plethora of features the world couldn’t dream of a few decades ago. In fact, nearly 1.8 million EVs were registered in the US in the year 2020, and this number is projected to grow rapidly.

Tesla’s cult following is well deserved, but electric vehicles had a humble beginning, which was a far cry from the luxury electric cars on the road today.

In the 1830s, horseback and buggies were the primary modes of transportation. Around the same time, Robert Anderson invented the first crude electrical vehicle. This electric carriage had a strapped battery and motor, which promptly eliminated the need for horses to propel the vehicle. In addition to being a groundbreaking invention that inspired the future of electric vehicles, this electric carriage was also environmentally-friendly compared to gasoline-powered vehicles.

Nearly six decades later, William Morrison created a successful electric vehicle in the US. This self-powered wagon paved the way for the electric and hybrid vehicles of the 21st century.

Soon electric vehicles started gaining popularity. This can be credited to the fact that these vehicles created far less noise and pollution compared to gas and steam automobiles. Moreover, electric cars were also a lot easier to drive.

That being said, the popularity declined as electric vehicles were costly and offered low speed as well as short-range. With the turn of the century, the concern for the environment reignited the interest in electric vehicles.

The demand for electric cars flourished in the 20th century. In fact, nearly a third of vehicles on US roads were electric at the time. In 1901, Ferdinand Porsche combined the best of electric and gas to create the world’s first hybrid vehicle. The Lohner–Porsche Mixed Hybrid was powered by a gasoline-engine generator and batteries.

1920 again saw the decline of electric vehicles. With the easy availability of cheap crude oil, running a gas-powered vehicle was the economical option. This surged the popularity of gas-powered automobiles over electric vehicles. This continued for the next three decades.

However, gas prices started to inflate in the 1960s and 1970s significantly. And this again revived the demand for electric vehicles. The resurgence of interest in electric vehicles encouraged manufacturers around the globe to devise renewable fuel automobiles.

A few years later, Sebring-Vanguard launched CitiCar. The popularity of the wedge-shaped electric vehicle skyrocketed by 1975.

The cycle of the rise and fall of electric cars continued over the next few years. In 1997, Toyota released the first mass-produced hybrid car, the Prius. Since then, several major automakers have jumped on board and launched a wide range of electric and hybrid vehicles.

People new to the world of electric and hybrid cars may wonder if the driving laws are any different for such cars. The short answer is no. Whether you drive a Toyota Prius or Tesla Model S, you are expected to follow every traffic law applicable to other vehicles on the road. Moreover, you cannot blame reckless driving on your car’s autopilot mode. Even if your car is self-driving, you, as the driver, are solely responsible for the way the vehicle behaves. Instead of using this futile argument, use The Winit app to fight unfair traffic and parking tickets.

The repercussions of climate change are becoming more apparent every day. Now more than ever, it’s crucial to adopt environmentally-friendly lifestyle changes. And driving an electric or hybrid vehicle can be one such choice. Even if you have a tight budget, you can consider affordable EV models offered by Nissan, Mini Cooper and Chevrolet.

Renowned Yoga Mentor Asha Nayaswami on Finding Life’s Meaning Through Spiritual Awakening and Expanded Consciousness

Finding purpose in life is the common desire that binds all people. However, many find that the path towards this purpose remains elusive, which leaves them  feeling disappointed, unfulfilled, and hopeless. Having experienced this same despair, yet finding the way out of it, Asha Nayaswami has dedicated her life to guiding others to the path of happiness through the lifestyle of yoga.

Like most truth-seekers, she once struggled to find what life is all about. As she desperately sought meaning, she came across Swami Kriyananda, a direct disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi and a world-renowned yogi and guru. Kriyananda is also known for founding the spiritual communities movement Ananda. In November 1969, Asha met the man who would become her teacher at a talk he was giving at Stanford University.

At the time, Asha had already dropped out, but she still decided to go back to listen to Swami speak. Looking back on the experience, she shared, “As soon as he walked into the room, before he even spoke, I recognized him as the polestar I was seeking. It came as an inner voice: ‘He has what I want!’ I later understood what he had was joy and freedom.”

The fateful encounter completely changed the 22-year-old Asha’s trajectory. She was motivated to emulate the man of wisdom she calls Swamiji, or, “respected teacher.” Soon after meeting Kriyananda, she moved to the rural community of Ananda, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Eventually, she became a leader in the community and was asked to be a global ambassador for Ananda by Swami Kriyananda in 2012, shortly before his passing.

Because of Asha’s steadfast dedication to the vision, as well as her solid bond with her mentor, he commissioned her to write his biography. In 2019, LIGHTBEARER was published, a first-hand account of more than 40 years of close association with her teacher.

Aside from these accomplishments, Asha has established an excellent reputation as a spiritual mentor. She has delivered thousands of talks over the past five decades in countries around the world. As the pandemic eases, the extraordinary woman has gone back to pursuing her global role, embarking on a 12-country world tour.

Asha’s unique perspective and wisdom, evident in her videos and audio recordings, serve as a spiritual lifeline for people of all faiths worldwide. Through her YouTube channel and Instagram page, her videos have been collectively viewed millions of times.

Asha Nayaswami’s admirable passion for teaching has made her a beloved and respected mentor. “In my many years with Swmaiji I was able to observe, record, practice, and share. This teaching, this way of life, the spiritual practice itself, communion with our own higher reality – this is the key to happiness and fulfillment everyone is seeking. So it would be unthinkable for me to do anything but devote my life to sharing with all who are interested. I’m not here to persuade or convert, however, only to share.”

Digital Wellness – Necessity or a Luxury? An Insight by Nina Hersher

Digital wellness is a new concept that has come to the limelight during the pandemic. There was a time when mobile phones were considered harmless. Yes, we are talking about the era when Nokia 3310 was all the rage! Mobile phones were made for a particular purpose, and that was to help people stay connected. Send texts! Make calls! Play Snake! What more could you want from a cellphone? Back then, it was cutting-edge technology, but compared to today’s smartphones, the flip phone is considered a caveman invention.

Since the advancement of the digital world, various applications or apps have been introduced that have greatly influenced our lives. Around the world, such technologies are commonly used regardless of their effects and are considered a necessity of life. It is no secret that we are on our smartphones for over 13 hours a day, sometimes longer, from checking our messages to using social media platforms and the Internet for almost everything, including online shopping, watching informative and educational content like news, and binge watching shows, the list is endless. In recent times, sadly, we have been relying on the digital world way too much and have lost track of the physical and mental health consequences of technology overuse. Even though these technologies have made our lives relatively easy with on-demand communication and instant gratification, the fact is they have also adversely affected our social and personal communication skills.

With the world being connected more through different social media platforms, it has also resulted in people being isolated; hence, the majority of people are suffering from depression and anxiety. Before digitization, life was much simpler. But now, the digital world is focused on creating an illusion that everything has to be perfect. Whether it is our selfies or just uploading vacation pictures, we are constantly comparing our lives with others. For the sake of getting meaningless likes and reactions on their posts, some people have sacrificed many moments of presence with their loved ones. It is an ongoing rat race that never seems to end. However, Nina Hersher, the Chief Learning Officer of The Digital Wellness Institute, has declared digital wellness a necessity and shared how we must bring intention to our attention to support not only our mental health but also our human connections and relationships.

The Chief Learning Officer of the Digital Wellness Institute, Nina co-authored the bestselling book, ‘Your Playbook for Thriving in the Remote Work Era’ and is also a highly sought-after speaker. Known as the leading expert in the digital wellness industry, this dynamic entrepreneur holds a specialized Master of Social Work in Norms of Connectivity, Digital Culture and Program Development and is an Oasis on the Overwhelm Facilitator, Meditation Teacher, and all-around wellness guru for the digital era. Her efforts to spread awareness about digital wellness led her to create the annual Digital Wellness Day, which has run annually for the last three years on the first Friday in May, reaching over 7 million people in 36 countries across the globe. She has been featured on some of the biggest platforms, including Forbes, The Stanford Social Innovation Review, Al Jazeera, and Voice of America, for her remarkable work.

It was the lack of resources and education in the field of digital wellness that motivated Nina to take some initiative and help people struggling with such issues. After graduating from school, she co-founded The Digital Wellness Warriors in 2018 (which was rebranded as the Digital Wellness Collective later that year), creating the only global trade association for digital wellness professionals. This highly publicized group was known for connecting and serving digital wellness and tech-life balance professionals. In fact, Fast Company reported and recognized it as a place “where software developers and others working to make smartphones less harmful can collaborate.” As The Digital Wellness Collective sought to standardize Digital Wellness Education and create research-based educational programs, it evolved into the Digital Wellness Institute, which partnered with the two-time Emmy award-winning documentary The Social Dilemma as an impact partner to promote the first Certified Digital Wellness Educator program.

Nina Hersher’s leadership on this program and contribution to the digital wellness curriculum has been praised as it highlights how we can harness technology to fuel instead of fatigue us and use it to support mental health. While it seems the digital world has engulfed us and going offline seems almost impossible, we must acknowledge that tech-enabled work and fully remote jobs are a source of income for many. Nina has developed some techniques that help in minimizing their harmful effects and achieve screen-life balance, all the while improving self-care. One of her famous techniques is an exercise known as the Unplug Box. This box doubles as a charging station and can be placed anywhere in the household outside of the bedroom. The aim is to intentionally unplug and recharge yourself just as you would recharge your phone. Nina recommends creating an unplugged morning and evening routine for at least 30 minutes upon waking and prior to going to bed to support sleep, health and peace of mind. A recent study shows that many kids of the digital era suffer from low self-esteem and lack of confidence. In fact, these kids showed a lack of communication and emotional skills compared to their previous generation, which didn’t have much digital exposure. These are the challenges that the world is facing right now. Nina Hersher firmly believes that digital wellness is not a luxury but, in fact, a necessity. We must update our tools and practices for digital wellness: the optimum state of health and wellbeing each individual using technology is capable of achieving.
