How pianist I-Lin Tsai is joining forces with Julian Toha to share Asian Pop culture in Classical Piano Concerts

Growing up in Tainan Taiwan, classical music was always something I-Lin Tsai was immersed in. Both her and her brother went to the top music performance in their area. Between that program and home they would dedicate hours and hours every day to cultivate their talent. But alongside that deep passion for classical music, I-Lin developed her love for pop music. Specifically, her favorite artist – JJ Lin was a heavy influence on her commitment to music performance. 

Where Asian pop music differs from American pop music is in its melodic patterns, instrumentation and language. Where Asian pop music aligns with all other pop music is in its harmonic structure, song form and song topics (love, social settings, etc). “Shifting this music to the piano and more specifically – classical music – produces an interesting effect rich harmonies, expressive melodies and interlocking rhythmic patterns.”  These are the reasons that I-Lin Tsai states for why she’s bringing Asian pop music to the classical music scene. “It just makes sense to blend this music with greats like Debussy who were so passionate about harmony”. The result is a unique concert program that I-Lin Tsai was able to take on her 2022 West Coast Concert tour.

“This is a new type of pianist that we haven’t seen so often in the classical music world”, said Ingrid Friedman the event planner at another post concert interview she did on tour at the Berkeley Piano Club. She went on to further highlight that, “She’s bringing the technical depth of a trained classical pianist to the catchy melodies and hypnotic harmonies of pop music.” And this is exactly what classical music audiences are looking for – a renaissance. It’s clearly working for I-Lin Tsai because she’s grown in her performances this year for the short time she’s put in since completing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Pennsylvania State University in 2021. 

The tour also featured Pianist Julian Toha who formerly toured as a soloist between 2009 and 2014. The two of them share two pieces on the concert program. The Suite for Piano Duet on Themes by JJ Lin and an arrangement of Rachmaninov’s famous song Vocalize (also for piano duet).

Although I-Lin is the first to do something like this in the classical music scene for Asian pop music, she’s not the first to do something like this overall. Other notable concert artists who are doing or have done this type of theme-based music date back to Bach himself who used to borrow themes from popular music. This continued throughout the classical period with composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with his Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Variations that he composed from a famous french folk song. Franz Liszt would do this during his concert touring years with everything from famous opera tunes to popular music motifs. In contemporary music, Pianist Christopher O’Riley is famous for his piano arrangement work in bringing Radiohead to the classical music scene. This tradition of these great artists re-engineering pop music into classical forms is now being carried forward by I-Lin Tsai and her work on themes by JJ Lin in her latest tour.

Spotlight: Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE, and Apple Watch Ultra

The Apple Event finally launched yesterday and fans were treated to three of the upcoming devices from the tech giants.

The Apple Watch, Airpods, and iPhone 14 lineup were introduced to the public, racking up praises from viewers worldwide.

Here we take a look at one of the most polarizing devices in the event: the Apple Watches.

The lineup

Apple introduced three new Apple Watches – the Apple Watch Series 8, the Apple Watch SE, and the Apple Watch Ultra.

The Apple Watch Series 8 features three new devices that, on first glance, may appear to be the same as the previous lineup.

However, a closer look proves that isn’t going to be the case.

Apple Watch Series 8

The Apple Watch Series 8 comes with a similar design to the Series 7, but the biggest takeaways are in its features, which are also available on the SE and Ultra.

Series 8 comes with an always-on retina display reinforced by a crack-resistant front crystal.

With normal use, its battery can last up to 36 hours with an iPhone present when the low power mode is switched on.

The Apple Watch Series 8 also added a new temperature-sensing feature.

Apple also created an advanced sensor-fusion algorithm used for the watch’s Crash Detection for real-world accidents.

The feature comes with motion data, a barometer, GPS, and microphone.

If a user gets into a car crash, the device checks in with them, dialing emergency services if they are unresponsive after a 10-second countdown.

Apple Watch SE

The entry-level model comes with a few design changes, shedding off the Apple Watch Series 3 look.

The SE also features the S8 SiP advanced dual-core processor in the other two new Apple Watches, making it 20% faster.

Apple Watch Ultra

The crown jewel in the lineup, the Apple Watch Ultra takes its name seriously, becoming the most endurable piece of tech that Apple has made thus far.

“Inspired by explorers and athletes from around the world, we created an entirely new category of Apple Watch designed for new extreme environments,” explained Apple’s chief operating officer Jeff Williams.

“It’s the most rugged and capable Apple Watch yet.”

“Apple Watch Ultra is a versatile tool that empowers users to push their boundaries with adventure, endurance, and exploration.”

Compared to the other models that are made with aluminum, the Ultra is made from aerospace-grade titanium, providing the perfect balance of corrosion resistance, durability, and weight.

The Apple Watch Ultra is made specifically for extreme water sports, recreational diving, and runners.

It includes a precision dual-frequency GPS that integrates L1 and L5, along with new positioning algorithms.

The Ultra also offers the most accurate GPS, providing users with the precise distance, pace, and route data while training or competing.

The latest Apple Watch also runs on watchOS 9, giving it the necessary tools for athletes and helping them elevate their strengths.

Apple Watch Ultra also features many of the features that the other new devices offer, including two new motion sensors and an advanced sensor-fusion algorithm.

Price and availability

The Series 8 and SE models are already available for pre-order from Apple with sales starting on September 16.

The Apple Watch Ultra will launch on September 23.

NFL Stars Turn to Nick Iby for Unique Artwork

A piece of paper, some permanent markers, and a knack for art — this is how Nick Iby began his passion for creating artwork. Little did he know that his way of expressing himself would be his ticket to success and connect him with NFL players.

Nick was like any other young adult trying to figure out life; just like anyone, he had to face tough times. For others, their coping mechanism was socializing or doing anything that would get their mind off things. For Nick, art became his outlet to reflect on these situations.

During his university years, Nick would usually spend his time making drawings. “I spent around 10-12 hours working on one drawing, and when I finished, I decided to hang it up on my wall. I didn’t feel better after my first drawing, so I produced about a dozen more and hung them on my dorm room wall,” Nick recalls.

Nick’s friends often visited and marveled at his artwork, giving him the idea to make more oversized prints and launch a website for his creations.

“All my friends in college just kept on giving me ideas to draw, shoes to paint, and most importantly, continued confidence. Friends started giving me shoes to paint on, and then I moved on to big canvases [to paint on]. I had no real plan; everything just started to snowball into the next thing,” Nick says

In 2020, when the pandemic hit and everyone had to stay inside for quarantine, Nick was faced with an exciting problem… how can you make a living off of art without leaving your apartment? Well, for Nick, he turned to social media. The NFL was also shut down, and with that thought in mind, Nick started messaging players in the NFL to see if they would want some custom art for their homes.

To Nick’s surprise, the first person to reply and order was none other than Carolina Panther’s running back, Christain McCaffery. Not only was Christain’s order, but the simple fact that he saw Nick’s message was a green flag for Nick and just a sign to keep going.

Now, in 2022, Nick has become one of the most sought-after modern artists in the US. He has transitioned from doing doodles on pens and paper to creating custom canvases for NFL clients using a mix of spray paint and paint markers. His main objective with each piece is to capture what is most important in a client’s life. Whether that is their favorite play from their career, family photos, favorite cartoons, or anything else that speaks truth to them, Nick finds an organic way to blend it all to create a truly one-of-a-kind art piece. 

Nick’s artwork is trendy and captivating, especially for the younger generation. He has sold over a hundred paintings to notable NFL Players such as, but not limited to, Jalen Ramsey, Christain McCaffery, Aaron Rogers, Chris Carson, Chase Claypool, Daron Payne, Jarran Reed, Taylor Heinicke, Mike Edwards, and many more.
