Carlie Mantilla Latina Comedian breaking boundaries in writing, acting, and…Christmas

When COVID unexpectedly shut down the LA comedy clubs, Latina stand-up comedian, writer and actress Carlie Mantilla used the time away from the stage to try something completely different: she wrote a Christmas TV movie. Angel Falls Christmas will premiere exclusively on GAC Family on Friday, November 26 at 8PM ET. The movie stars Jessicа Lowndes as Ally, а workаholic doctor who breаks up with her boyfriend just before Christmаs. However, а chаnce encounter with а hаndsome bаristа (Chаd Michаel Murrаy) mаy be just whаt she needs to shаke her holidаy blues.

Mantilla co-wrote the screenplay with her fiance John Eliot Jordan (Loudermilk) and also appears in the movie. “We were in the middle of COVID, and at the time we were quarantining  with John’s grandma for a few weeks on Cape Cod. We’d write all day in her basement while she read Bitcoin books and played online bridge tournaments. Then at 6 on the dot, she’d call us up for a glass of chardonnay and some cheese. It was the perfect environment to write a festive holiday rom com!”

Mantilla and Jordan have several other projects in development, including two other TV movies. Mantilla’s roots and sensibility, however, remain very much comedic. A fixture on the LA comedy standup scene, she was previously named “Best Comedian in L.A.” by Los Angeles Magazine. .

I was incredibly fortunate to have two amazing comedy mentors, Rocco Urbisci and Lily Tomlin, who not only helped shape who I am as a comedian and actress but who also gave me priceless advice on how to navigate a career in this industry.”

As a Latina woman in Hollywood, Mantilla is excited by the recent call for more authentic Latinx representation. “For years when I’d go on auditions for Latina characters, I’d read for really one-dimensional,  stereotypical parts that didn’t reflect at all what I knew to be true. The Latino community is so much more than what the industry’s portrayed us as.”

Despite the recent attention given to this issue, Latinx creatives remain grossly underrepresented in the entertainment industry, particularly behind the camera. According to the 2020 WGAW Inclusion Report, an estimated 4.7% of screenwriters and 8.7% of TV writers are Latinx. Furthermore, according to UCLA’s Hollywood Diversity Report 2021: Pandemic in Progress, among the top 185 English-language films released in 2020, about 3% of credited writers were Latinx.

Mantilla is currently co-writing a comedy pilot (with Jordan and his brother, Tommy Jordan) inspired by  some of her own experiences from her time as one of the only non-white teens in a nearly all-white town in Idaho.

I spent part of my childhood in Mexico and the other part in the States. American kids thought I was weird for listening to Grupo Limite instead of N*SYNC. But Mexican kids thought I was just as weird for constantly quoting Kenan and Kel–my orange soda bit never landed!”

Although Mantilla was a teen trying to navigate between these two worlds, the pilot centers on a 30-year-old Mexican-American woman whose life–and identity–get turned upside down when she goes to Mexico for the first time.

Are you Mexican enough? Are you American enough? I think it’s an ongoing process for so many of us that we just haven’t seen on TV, let alone in a comedy. There’s a real hunger out there for authentic stories about nuanced Latina protagonists,” said Mantilla.

Mantilla’s sense of this “hunger” isn’t unfounded.  According to a 2020 report from Nielsen, Latinx people contribute more to US population growth than any other group and will reach $2.3 trillion in buying power by 2024. Latinx households were more likely than US households overall to have at least one SVOD subscription and, since the start of the pandemic, 70% of the Latinx people surveyed said they had increased the amount of time spent watching movies or series on SVOD.

I don’t think we can wait around for good parts. I think we have to create our own opportunities and that’s what inspires me to keep writing,” said Mantilla.

You hear the advice to write the story you wish you could come upon. That’s what this show is for me. A show where a Latina can see herself  in an authentic way–and hopefully laugh a lot because it’s, you know,  a comedy.”

How Companies Can Prepare For Hiring Transgender Employees

In the past few years, companies large and small have ramped up their focus on diversity and inclusion initiatives. Being prepared to employ transgender employees should be part of any robust diversity strategy. Making sure the approach to attracting and retaining transgender employees is appropriate and accomodating takes knowledge and dedication.

It’s no secret that transgender individuals are often the victim of discrimination and sometimes violent hate crimes. Discrimination in employment for transgender individuals can be rampant. This history of discrimination makes education for employers even more critical.

Wynne Nowland knows firsthand the delicate balance of integrating transgender employees into the workplace. An insurance industry CEO, Nowland is also a transgender woman. At 56, Nowland came out as transgender to her entire company via email. The email stated, “You’ve all known me as Wayne, but tomorrow morning I will arrive at work as Wynne.”

Acting on instinct in a largely unprecedented situation, Nowland blazed a trail for future transgender leaders to show up as their authentic selves in the workplace.

How can companies prepare for including transgender employees when hiring? Nowland passes on some knowledge and direction for other leaders who want to fling the doors open and welcome transgender employees with open arms.

Companies Are Getting Better at Inclusion

Even as recently as a decade ago, the full inclusion of transgender individuals in the workplace was still taboo. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) studies, more than one in four transgender individuals have lost a job due to bias in the workplace. Transgender individuals face hiring refusals, sexual discrimination and harassment, and privacy violations. Statistics show a large amount of unemployment among transgender people, twice the rate of the population as a whole.

It was a headline-making event for Wynne Nowland to come out to her employees. But, in the past few years, diversity and inclusion has been pushed to the forefront of important considerations for companies large and small.

“I think in general, larger companies are being more proactive with respect to DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) procedures and initiatives than smaller ones,” says Nowland.

Nowland cautions against thinking that just because larger companies are being proactive with diversity initiatives towards transgender employees, they are better at such initiatives. Talking about initiatives and executing them correctly are two different beasts. Nowland acknowledges that grassroots efforts by smaller companies may do a better job at addressing the disconnect between initiative and execution.

Fighting History and Precedence

Sadly, but likely not surprisingly, location plays a role in hiring practices for transgender people. Traditionally conservative/red states fall behind in hiring transgender employees. A landmark case in transgender rights, Bostock v. Clayton County, decided in 2020 that federal law prohibits anti-transgender discrimination in employment. Despite this ruling, anti-transgender bias still runs rampant, especially in places like the Bible Belt. Before the July 2020 ruling, it was completely legal to fire an employee for being transgender.

Businesses looking to turn the tide of bias need to actively court transgender employees. Nowland encourages businesses to use national and local advocacy groups chapters to reach potential employees and spread the word about equal-opportunity employment initiatives.

Nowland cautions against simply “talking the talk” concerning diversity initiatives. Walking the walk is imperative to right the wrongs of past discrimination.

“I think the biggest litmus test for ‘walking the walk’ is to engage the advocacy groups in meaningful discourse, to see how they feel society is doing in giving the folks they represent a true, fair shake,” says Nowland.

Transgender and Job Hunting

When hunting for a job, being a transgender individual may add an extra layer of anxiety to the applying and interviewing process. Even though the world is becoming more accepting, many companies still have a lot to learn in terms of fair hiring practices.

Nowland emphatically cautions against believing that the interview process should be different for transgender people than for anyone else.

“It’s not incumbent upon us to make our gender identity a factor in the hiring decision,” says Nowland, “As with other underrepresented groups, it simply shouldn’t be in the mix.”

Transgender men and women should prepare for interviews the same way non-transgender potential employees do: present yourself the best you can, come prepared with a knowledge of the company you are interviewing with, and discuss how your talents can help the company achieve its goals.

True equality comes when transgender men and women are not treated differently from non-transgender applicants.

Preparing to Welcome Transgender Employees and Leaders

Businesses large and small should focus on welcoming transgender people as new employees and preparing to support current employees who transition after already being employed.

When Wynne Nowland was preparing to come to work for the first time presenting as a woman, she put a lot of thought and effort into doing so in the best way possible. She decided a personal approach was warranted.

“I sent an email out to our entire team prior to them seeing me for the first time presenting as a woman. I went into a fair amount of detail as to what was going on and why and asked for their support,” says Nowland.

Nowland also assisted her company’s HR department in researching best practices for accommodating transgender individuals in the workplace. This preparation included being proactive about any questions that may arise from Nowland presenting as a woman at work.

This intimate, personalized approach is one Nowland applied to all areas of her life, at work and outside of work. She even sent messages to her local butcher and dry cleaner, letting them know about the transition.

“It’s a tactic I think that worked extremely well,” says Nowland.

As time goes on and more transgender men and women like Wynne Nowland share their experiences, the equity gap will begin to close. Transgender people have a lot to offer the working world in all industries. Employers can do their part by applying best practices towards attracting and retaining transgender employees.

As much as we would like to believe that the path to success is smooth so long as we pour the much-needed time and resources to materialize our vision, countless roadblocks may stand in the way. For some, it is the lack of resources that prevented them from securing coveted positions in their chosen fields, while for others, it is the self-limiting beliefs that have hindered them from standing at the forefront of their respective industries. In the face of challenges that peppered along his way to greatness, Ariston Cortes barrelled through and overcame them all. Instead of allowing trials and tribulations to overpower his journey, he transformed them into launching pads where he could catapult himself towards the summits of success.

Every deal closed and contract signed is an effort solely done by its founder. Being a hands-on leader, Ariston Cortes sets the bar high among industry players across the globe.

Today, Ariston Cortes and his DonMedia team have managed to pull an average monthly revenue of $310,000. “Our clients, both current and future, will have the power and ability to leverage the funding that DonMedia has acquired to help kickstart and grow their business,” said Ariston.

Without a doubt, Ariston Cortes is just getting started. Modeled by Karissa

People often say it’s never too late to go after your heart’s desire, pursuing your dream with a relentless passion that will eventually lead to success. One individual who truly embodies this saying is the award-winning photographer Kapil Ralli, who took the bold step to pick up the camera when he was thirty-five years old. Since then, his decision has continued to pave the way for him. Today, he is an internationally acclaimed photographer who has recreated historic artworks like Venus Verticordia – a painting by Rosetti; The bridesmaid By John Millais; Diana, the huntress by Guillaume Seignac; and many more.

Kapil Ralli is a renowned artist with over a decade of experience behind the camera lens. His style of photography mainly includes editorials and high fashion. “I love creating theme-based work—I have ranged from Murder mysteries, Sports-based, Dreamworld, Farmland to Hollywood, a Tale of Sisters to Art based such as Rossetti’s Venus Verticordia, Seignac’s Diana the huntress, Gustav’s Water Serpent or Waterhouse’s Soul of a Rose,” he shared.

Kapil was born and brought up in India before relocating to New York City with his family back in 2008. In this land of opportunities and city of possibilities, he found his passion for creating art through the lens and bringing images to life. “I wasn’t into photography before we moved to the US—I took it up when I was in NY. But the more I got into it, the more serious I became,” he shared.

For the next eleven years, he worked and lived in the city, upgrading his skills as a professional photographer and getting his professional camera gear and certificates through the NY Institute of Photography. His certification gave him a new artistic perspective.  “I started to look at things differently—the light, the colors, the texture, the angles, the viewpoint, the story. I evolved,” he said.

Since then, his extraordinary artwork has been published in over 40 magazines, including Vanity, Moevir & Flannele (French Magazines), Lucy, Elegant, Ellements, Opium, Pump, Selin, to name a few. In addition, he has received international accolades such as the Black Spider Award, One Eyeland Award and the widely acclaimed International Color Award, which receives over 6200 entries from over 73 countries. He is also the Brand Ambassador for Modelmanagement.com, the world’s largest modeling platform.

Kapil’s art style is set apart by his unique color themes, compositions, and how he interprets the art around him. “I don’t just shoot. I create art—I have a vision, and then I create it. I work backward by first visualizing the image I want to create. Then I start to work backward. Which model, location, colors, dresses, time off day, mood, light, make-up, etc. In the end, my bold colors/composition/picture harmony is what sets me apart,” he says.

Kapil wants to continue establishing his brand as a photographer in the art industry in the coming years. “I want to be published in the world’s top magazines and create a name for myself. I want to create a visual stamp for myself. Whenever someone sees my work—they can identify it’s me,” he says.

Hyperconn™: A Fail-Proof Internet Connection Without Limits

The majority of the world’s population has internet connection, but this statement is not news considering that people live in an era where technology reigns supreme over anything else. As we know it, the world functions using many of technology’s innovative contributions. Although it’s not something that can be considered entirely positive, many people cannot think of or imagine a life where technology is not present. As the world continues to be modernized by tech, more people become dependent on some of these commodities like the internet.

It’s safe to assume that more than fifty percent of people worldwide use the internet for their specific needs, be it for business, school, or leisure purposes. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, internet usage has exponentially grown as people have no choice but to quarantine in the safety of their homes. For whatever reason, having fast internet speed is essential. Unfortunately, some providers are known to charge an arm and a leg for faster internet plans, and third-world countries are not given options.

Being the first and leading mobile data traffic sharing marketplace globally, uCloudlink has officially unveiled its new state-of-the-art technology, HyperConn™. Launched on June 30, 2021, by uCloudlink’s CEO and Director, Chaohui Chen, and Victor Xu, Chief Sales Officer and President of Marketing and Sales, HyperConn™ promise users an uninterrupted network connection at all times, no matter the circumstances and environment the user is in.

Furthermore, through its powerful and seamless switching, HyperConn™ ensures that the given network will never fail regardless of the open applications, how many people are utilizing the network connection, or where the user is.

“HyperConn™ is a groundbreaking technological advancement that is the result of years of a collective effort from our hundred-strong R&D team. Imagine a car being able to freely make use of all the lanes available on a highway without needing to stop for tolls and other barricades. This level of flexibility and freedom is what we offer with HyperConn™. We believe that our forward-thinking solution will help the world prepare for whatever may come our way in the future and move us one step closer to sharing without limitations,” Chen proudly explained.

In Search of Happiness: Award-Winning Documentary ‘The Author’ Scours the World to Find the True Meaning of Joy

The age-old quest for happiness has been at the tip of our tongues since time immemorial. It is a topic that has seemingly been debated for countless generations, but we have never truly found an answer to the profound sense of joy. Filmmakers Nima Soofi and Daniel Irias have traveled the world to find the coveted answer to this mystery of life, and they have beautifully documented their pristine journey in their film entitled “The Author.”

Suffice to say, the film doesn’t necessarily answer the question but presents it to the audience in the most cerebral way possible. It is a film that is rather felt than absolutely understood. It is a film that mirrors the viewer’s perception of themselves through the eyes of its endearing subjects.

“The Author” does not seek to answer the unanswerable. What it simply does is encourage its audience to dig deeper within themselves to find the intrinsic nature of happiness. The film just lets the camera roll and tells various stories of where happiness could potentially bloom, whether it be through the lens of a seedy nightclub, an aspiring athlete born out of nothing, a monk who has seemingly found peace within himself, or a mother who has lost her child through suicide. The film simply shows us that happiness could take many forms, and it could be right under our noses all along.

Nima and Daniel have pieced together a truly remarkable piece of cinema, letting their subjects take the lead and tell their stories in the most genuine way possible. Without a doubt, the film’s cinematography carries much of the weight of its subject matter. It’s as if the camera sways in the most fleeting of ways, much like how happiness can sometimes slip under our fingers.

As it portrays its subjects, “The Author” takes a much more controlled movement with its cinematography, zeroing in on its subjects as they recount their lives for the audience to reflect upon. It is a truly exceptional film that needs to be experienced to be understood. The film gives off a feeling of universal belongingness as it practically tells the audience that happiness can be found within, and the stories are a powerful testament to that fact.

From the very soil of the United States all the way to Bhutan, Bangkok, and many other parts of the world, Nima and Daniel have traveled far and wide to discover the truth behind what makes all of us truly human. “The Author” is a film that is practically required viewing. The film is an introspective delight as it dwells in the fact that there is joy in the stories that we tell. That each chapter in our lives is written by our very hands, and taking the reigns is a form of happiness in itself.

There is much to unpack in this absolute tour-de-force of a film, as it recounts multiple stories of real people, real events, and real emotions. It brings me absolute joy to even talk about the film, and in a way, “The Author” has made me realize that by telling my own story, I am finding the happiness that I’ve been searching for all this time.

Alabama Artist Kidd Rifft Is Making Waves Across the Music Industry

As the new year begins artists across the world are trying to make their mark, it seems that new music has been dropping left and right. It can be hard as a fan to find new artists and songs that reflect your inner musical taste, especially given the amount of music being released everyday on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Youtube. I have been attempting to find new artists that resonate with me and that deserve more attention on the national and even international stage.

During my search for new up and coming talent I came across a young artist that goes by the name Kidd Rifft. He is from Birmingham, Alabama and has been making music since 2018. Starting a huge wave in 2021 with the release of his hit song “Colors” he has shown no signs of letting up. To start off the new year he just dropped a new music video on Youtube titled “Alphabet Baby ft. Alyssa Jane” and it is a must-see. A smooth melodic record that gets you in your feels on the first listen.

Kidd Rifft gets intimate on this new track. He shows us a side of himself that fans have been waiting to see from him, opening up about his deep emotional feelings and getting immersed in his storytelling as an artist. The song features Alyssa Jane, who comes in with truly beautiful vocal patterns. The two of them make an incredible duo, and honestly I hope this is not the only track we get to hear from these two up-and-coming artists.

In the modern era of music good songs are not enough to make a true impact, you need to master multiple elements of the business in order to develop a true brand vision and lasting career in music. Kidd Rifft is showing us this exact intention with the release of this music video. Adding a visual element to a track like this makes him stand out amongst his competition, and shows fans labels and investors that he is serious about music as a career not simply just a hobby. His song is available on major music platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud. The artist is also on TikTok.

The visual on this track is extremely well done, it is shot very professionally and adds to the story that Kidd Rifft already has told in the record. Having a visual artist who can help bring your vision to life is essential in 2022 for any artist looking to make a career in music. If you like slow R&B/ Pop tracks with killer production, I suggest you give “Alphabet Baby” a listen on whatever platform you stream music and also watch the music video on youtube.

Kidd Rifft is making waves across the music industry with the release of this new music video! Make sure you check him out, and follow him on social media to keep up with all things Kidd Rifft.
