Sparkling in the Field of Interaction Design——Interviewing the Preeminent Designer Ying Chu Lai

The shaping of a greener lifestyle requires guiding people to transform their awareness of environmental protection into social consensus and collective action. It is precisely under the motivation of her work Miles Trips Page Design that the concept of environmental protection has become people’s living habits and civilized consciousness, which thus promoted the establishment of “green fashion” as a benchmark. She is one of the talented designers of the project Miles Trips Page Design——Ying Chu Lai.

“Green fashion” dominated by environmental awareness has increasingly penetrated into people’s lives, and Ying Chu Lai has made her own prodigious contribution to environmental protection with her professional knowledge. Growing up in Taipei since childhood, Ying Chu Lai majored in International Public Policy and Management and minored in Communication Management during her studies at University of Southern California. At that time, she showed a great interest in interaction design and started designing filters for Human-Center Interaction Design in her spare time. In 2022, Ying Chu Lai furthered her academic journey at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology for the second master’s degree and she then conducted in-depth research on interaction design. These research experiences during her school years have laid a solid foundation for her designs.

Recent years have witnessed burgeoning advancement in technology, and Human-Center Interaction Design has promoted the germination of environmental awareness among the public inch by inch. Ying Chu Lai, as a designer of both Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), focused on filter design for Human-Center Interaction Design, which was mainly published on Facebook (now renamed as Meta) and Instagram. According to statistics, the total number of users of her design has exceeded 1 million. In 2022, Ying Chu Lai participated in the design of the app Miles and was committed to creating the best experience for users. Through her and the team’s continuous efforts, the app Miles has finally emerged with a bang.

The project Miles Trips Page Design has been committed to environmental protection since its design, and has received multitudinous accolades for its design of User Interface (UI) on the app Miles. As a universal application, Miles provides tangible rewards for eco-friendly ways of transportation to facilitate sustainability in daily life. With this app, users can redeem their miles from various retailers and get rewarded further for their greener forms of commute or travel. The orientation of this project is to design Miles’ Trips Page by highlighting the app’s innovative competency——Trip Differentiation, which allows its users to split a single trip into multiple trips using different modes of transportation or combine multiple trips into one. In addition to Miles’ tracking and prediction AI technology, the intuitive interaction and visual design also make a pleasure experience for users to live a greener lifestyle. By emphasizing user-centered design principles, Ying Chu Lai and her team strive to deliver meaningful designs which have a positive impact on the whole world. Their exceptional work in UI and UX design exemplifies their vision and commitment to creating intuitive and engaging digital experiences.

In as much as its significant leverages, Miles Trips Page Design was published in the 2022 UX Design Awards yearbook and was recognized in two world-renowned design awards including the 2022 European Product Design Award (EPDA) and the 2022 Creative Communication Awards (C2A). Both of them are one of the most influential design awards in the world, just like the status of Oscar Golden Statuettes in the film industry. It is extremely laborious for some newly recognized designers to strive for these two awards. The European Product Design Award is created to recognize the expertise of talented international products and designers who strive to improve human’s daily lives with their practical and well-thought-out creations. It promotes the growth of product design globally and provides worldwide exposure to remarkable designers in the field. The Creative Communication Awards is created to recognize designers’ prominent achievements in various fields, including communication design, advertising, graphic design, etc. It also provides a platform for communication designers, agencies, graphic designers, freelancers, digital media designers, and the worldwide creative community. Furthermore, this project has received recognition from other representative awards such as the 2023 International Design Excellence Awards, the 2022 UX Design Awards, etc. These awards demonstrate strong recognition of her personal competence and charisma. As a talented designer honored with many awards, she has garnered recognition from experts and represented her infinite potential in advancing the design field in the future.

Ying Chu Lai, amid the interview, expressed her ambitious goal for the future, that is, she aspires to extend her talents to the field of interactive design integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) albeit she used to focus on UI and UX design. Her designs implying the essence of Human-Center Interaction Design, are not only simple interface designs, but also explore profound interaction between users and technology, which represents a harmonious coexistence between humans and technology. However, she opined that future design is not only quiescent, but also dynamic and intelligent. She also planned to integrate AI into her designs, thereby making users’ experiences more intelligent and personalized. Besides, she showed her great interest in VR, a major trend in future interaction design, as it can break through the limitations of the real world and create immersive experiences. She strived to explore virtual reality interfaces, bringing users into a new digital world where they interact intimately with technology.

 Ying Chu Lai has pushed UI and UX design to a new level with her glamorous vision and innovative thinking, and her plans have filled people with expectations for the future of interaction design. Albeit segmented fields of interaction design integrated AI and VR are still blank now, she is believed to sparkle in this field. In the future, she anticipates to create an engaging, emotional and innovative digital world for users through interactive design integrated AI and VR, where humans interact with technology more intriguingly, intimately and profoundly.
