Shuchen Wang: Bridging Design and Innovation

Introduction

Shuchen Wang is a distinguished User Experience Designer currently residing in the United States. Born in Hubei Province, China, she pursued her undergraduate degree in product design at the Industrial Design Department of Hubei University of Technology. She later graduated with a master’s degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York, USA. During her studies, she took on a leadership role as a product designer at Laxis, a U.S.-based startup, where she successfully led the team in designing the company’s first web product. After graduation, she joined Goldman Sachs as a UX/Product Designer, focusing on the development of internal products tailored for the investment banking division.

Achievements

Shuchen’s personal project, hiTribe, has earned her several prestigious awards, including the MUSE Design Awards, Muse Creative Awards, and VEGA Awards. Additionally, the team project she participated in, Focus, has won the Red Dot Design Award, VEGA Awards, and London Design Awards, showcasing her exceptional talent and innovative spirit in the design field.

Educational Journey and Passion for User-Centered Design

During her educational journey, a course that required students to observe and evaluate product design around them sparked Shuchen’s interest in user-centered design principles. She deeply explored related knowledge, investing significant time in reading Donald Norman’s classic “The Design of Everyday Things” and reflecting on the application of user-centered design principles in daily life.

Influenced by this philosophy, Shuchen chose to further her studies at the School of Visual Arts in New York, joining its graduate interactive design program. Here, she realized the indispensable importance of user research in the design process. Shuchen actively participated in a school-enterprise cooperation project with EY, designing an internal search engine to optimize the company’s internal resourcing. Through in-depth user interviews and detailed user personas, she and her team created a highly recognized project named “ONE EY.”

hiTRIBE: Enhancing Online Community Engagement

Shuchen’s personal project, hiTRIBE, is a browser extension designed to help online community organizers enhance engagement. hiTRIBE provides smooth services, including event registration, participation, follow-up, and better collaboration with moderators. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, online community activities have become more prevalent, yet challenging for event organizers to host engaging online meetings. Shuchen’s research revealed that most interviewees felt understood in a community of like-minded individuals. hiTRIBE addresses this by offering effective solutions for organizing and participating in online community activities, helping organizers efficiently coordinate events and enhancing user engagement.

Project FOCUS: Innovating Intelligent Driving Assistance

Another notable project, Focus, integrates Augmented Reality with the vehicle Head-Up Display System (AR HUD) to enhance the driving experience. Unlike existing solutions that overload drivers with excessive information, Focus presents precise and necessary information, reducing cognitive load. This sophisticated solution prioritizes key information, enhancing both safety and driving pleasure.

Collaboration and Innovation

Focus was co-designed by Shuchen and Jingdian Li. Shuchen led the user research and strategic approach to user experience design, summarizing and analyzing research findings. The collaboration was smooth and enlightening, with both designers bringing valuable insights to the project. Focus significantly enhances the driving experience through an intuitive augmented reality head-up display and effective information categorization.

Design Philosophy

Shuchen believes that empathy is the most crucial ability for a product designer. Empathy for users allows designers to connect with and understand their needs, leading to products that closely meet user requirements. Empathy for team members and business stakeholders is also vital, ensuring that products satisfy both user needs and business objectives. Shuchen’s approach involves conducting user research, understanding the needs of both users and stakeholders, and ensuring transparent communication throughout the design process.

Conclusion

Shuchen Wang exemplifies the qualities of an innovative and empathetic designer. Her contributions to the field of UX design, particularly through projects like hiTRIBE and Focus, demonstrate her commitment to enhancing user experiences and driving innovation. With her unique blend of technical expertise and user-centered design philosophy, Shuchen continues to make significant strides in the design industry.
