Dr. Ricardo Carreño Aguilera has had a long-standing career in both computer engineering and AI, contributing significantly to both academia and industry. Acting as a full-time research professor at Universidad del Istmo, Dr. Carreño Aguilera has been involved in areas such as neural networks, blockchain, the Internet of Things, and machine learning. He began his studies in Communications and Electronic Engineering in 1986 at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional. His passion for education led him to pursue an MBA from Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro, combining technical skills with business management. Enrolling in the IPN PhD program, he received extensive training in the area of systems engineering for technologies based on sound sensors. At CINVESTAV del IPN, he studied non-conventional neural networks and explored advanced machine learning methods.

Dr. Carreño Aguilera has accumulated experience in telecommunications, electronics, automation, and industrial fields. During the early years of his career, he assisted Ericsson with field service and maintaining communication networks. He later worked at MEI, gaining expertise in quality assurance of products used in vending machines. Wenglor, a German automation firm, provided the opportunity for him to develop leadership skills in the sales zone.
Between 2013 and 2018, Dr. Carreño Aguilera attended classes at the IMP and acquired knowledge in refinery systems, advanced control, safety, supply chain management, and project management. Since 2017, he has taught at Universidad del Istmo courses such as Neural Networks, Artificial Intelligence Agents, Databases, Communication Networks, and Computational Algorithms. He shares insights from ongoing research, creating a classroom environment that emphasizes practical applications.

Dr. Carreño Aguilera’s career has been shaped by research in intelligent computing, blockchain, and applications of AI in smart cities and healthcare. One notable project is Modeling and Optimization of Gasoline Blending Using Neural Networks: SECHITI, a funded venture aimed at improving gasoline refining through artificial neural networks. His research also explores combining IoT and blockchain technologies to enhance the security and efficiency of urban systems. He has worked on topics such as AI-based diagnostic systems, trading bots utilizing blockchain, mental health care via federated learning during COVID-19, and the development of semantic browser bots. These examples illustrate his efforts to apply AI in practical contexts.
There are patents registered under his name that demonstrate innovative approaches in AI and engineering. One patent describes a method for AI to recognize client types through facial gestures and predict legal service needs. Another patent proposes a filtering technique to reduce electrical interference in power lines, improving data transmission stability. He has led projects including the creation of an environmental database for airport-related studies and the development of AI models to improve DNA sequence alignment. The integration of semantic AI and Android web applications in IoT conversational robots is helping to advance smart building technologies.

Dr. Carreño Aguilera supports students through graduate and doctoral studies by providing guidance and seminars on topics such as facial recognition with AI, analyzing pandemic mobility patterns, detecting wind turbine issues via AI, and using AI for cryptocurrency control. His mentorship encourages problem-solving and innovation among trainees. His achievements have earned him Level 1 membership in the SNI in Mexico, selected by SECHITI. His profile is acknowledged by the Public Education Ministry (SEP) for his contributions to academics and research.
