Observability is an emerging field that focuses on gaining insights into complex systems by leveraging data and monitoring techniques. It enables organizations to understand, investigate and optimize the performance, reliability, and security of their systems and applications. Doyita Mitra, an accomplished professional with a diverse background in electronics engineering, monitoring systems, and cloud infrastructure optimization, has made significant contributions to the field of observability throughout her career.
Doyita Mitra’s career journey began with a career in electronics engineering to improving monitoring systems, optimizing cloud infrastructure, before finally advancing into the field of observability. She began her professional journey at HCL in 2013, where she played a crucial role in monitoring and creating knowledge-based articles for large clients such as FedEx. Her meticulous approach to monitoring systems and implementation of warning levels significantly reduced call volumes for FedEx, showcasing her ability to deliver tangible results.
Seeking new challenges and opportunities, Doyita joined Wipro in 2016 as a VMware engineer, where she focused on virtualization of systems and customer-facing projects solely on the VMware environment. Working with clients such as Airtel, she tackled complex tasks to solve problems in disaster recovery and migration control. However, she encountered challenges with monitoring tools due to the presence of heterogeneous systems across different departments, leading to a lack of coordination and an incomplete overall perspective.
Doyita’s pursuit of knowledge and passion for higher education led her to the University at Buffalo (UBuffalo) as a graduate student in Management and Information Systems program. Under the guidance of a professor working on virtualization, she actively contributed to the publication of a paper on threat intelligence. This experience exposed her to the cutting-edge developments in the field and sharpened her expertise in observability.
Transitioning to PWC as an Enterprise Cloud Architect in 2018, Doyita embraced a consulting role focused on advisory services. This was her first role in-person with customers where she was introduced to the advisory side of business. This opened the gates for her to understand more about the actual concerns of the organization like how to transition from legacy to modern distributed systems architecture. However, due to the extensive travel and wanting to return to a more engineering role, she joined Enstoa as a Senior Systems Analyst in 2019. There she met a familiar environment, VMware, and a new cloud platform, Azure. Before long, due to organizational restructuring, she was let go after 5 months.
While she always wanted to move to California due to its spectacularly diverse landscapes, she found herself working for a sports media and visual intelligence company, SMT (SportsMEDIA Technology) as a Systems Engineer after a month. It was an amazing experience for her when she, along with her colleagues covered the smooth media relay of The Daytona 500-mile-long NASCAR Cup Series motor race in February 2020. After the onset of COVID-19, the whole world went digital. This put a pause on her work at the data centers, but thankfully, due to the digital and cloud presence of SMT, she was able to continue her work remotely. In January 2022, during a data center transition of SMT, Doyita realized that there was more to digital transformation than just about adopting the latest software technologies and moving to a serverless environment, but that it required a cultural shift. She wanted organizations to understand what digital transformation actually is and why it is important in this Industry 4.0 revolution.
Doyita’s career aligned to Observability (a.k.a. o11y) when she joined Amazon Web Services (AWS) as a Solutions Architect. Her exceptional performance earned her an award within three months of joining AWS. Doyita’s journey within AWS led her from working in analytics to finding her true passion in observability, where she initially started working in 2013. Intrigued by the potential of open-source technology and inspired by the body of work on observability, Doyita recognized the untapped benefits of observability for governments, schools, and nonprofit organizations. Embracing this domain, she has become an expert advisor of observability, leveraging her expertise and knowledge to help organizations unlock valuable insights and optimize their cloud infrastructure.
Additionally, she is an expert author and her work across publications like Dataversity aim to help organizations understand the importance of observability and how they can unlock key business KPIs and digital transformation in this age of distributed systems.
Doyita Mitra’s career journey showcases her perseverance, adaptability, and commitment to delivering exceptional results. Her expertise in observability, combined with her passion for innovation and problem-solving, positions her as a trusted leader in the field, enabling organizations to harness the full potential of their cloud environments and drive success in the digital era. As Doyita continues to make significant strides in the field of observability, her impact on the industry is poised to grow, and her contributions will continue to shape the future of organizations.
