Man Wai Lam, the champion of the Hong Kong Fencing Challenge Competition, has once again showcased his expertise by leading his student, Nickless Roger Charles, to victory at the 2023 Asian Veteran Fencing Championships in Men’s Sabre. This remarkable achievement not only underlines Lam’s exceptional skills but also highlights his dedication to nurturing talent in the sport of fencing.
Lam’s journey in the world of fencing began at the age of 13, and since then, he has emerged as a prominent figure in Hong Kong’s fencing community. He is the founder of the Hong Kong Ignite Fencing Club, an institution committed to teaching fencing to children aged 3 to 14. Lam’s Club operates with a focus on quality education, limiting the class size to eight students per session to ensure individual attention and effective learning experiences.
The Ignite fencing club has flourished under Lam’s guidance, with over 1,000 students benefiting from his expertise. Lam’s vision goes beyond teaching basic fencing techniques; he and his team have developed a unique coaching program called “One Sword into the Soul.” This initiative aims to cultivate professional coaches within the industry, strengthen the community of fencing enthusiasts, and collectively promote the sport across various Hong Kong communities.

Speaking about the growing interest in fencing among parents, Lam shared his insights, “There has been a significant surge in parents wanting their children to learn fencing, especially after the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Fencing not only provides an excellent physical workout for children but also instills qualities like patience and bravery, shaping their character positively.”
Lam’s expertise is not confined to his coaching role at Ignite Fencing Club. Holding the highest degree of Fencing Coach (C-level), he conducts personalized 1v1 private classes in international schools and clubs across Hong Kong. His professionalism and dedication have positioned him as a leader in the fencing industry, inspiring both aspiring fencers and fellow coaches.
