“Compressed Trash City,” a thought-provoking series, was captured between 2017 and 2023 on the streets of New York City. The project delves into the city’s waste issue, shedding light on the psychological impact of urban waste on individuals. Through synthetic imagery and symbolism, Zhou’s work emphasizes the connection between garbage and human existence, symbolizing the pressures and constraints of modern society.

Zhou expressed her thoughts on the project, saying, “The garbage scenes in the city became a symbol of the pressure and constraints prevailing in modern society. People’s emotions and psychological states seemed to be compressed to the point of suffocation. This condition was not limited to individuals; it mirrored the prevailing collective psyche in society.”
Mengting Zhou’s recognition by the IPA and LensCulture reaffirms her position as a notable artist in the contemporary photography landscape. Her work encourages viewers to confront environmental concerns and approach psychological stress in healthier ways.
