Alex Wu (Zepeng Wu), a leading energy storage expert and Project Director at BYD Energy Storage Co., Ltd., is driving transformative progress in the global energy sector through visionary leadership and groundbreaking research. Wu, who holds an MBA from the University of Sunderland and a Bachelor’s degree in Traffic Engineering from Southwest Jiaotong University, combines a strong academic foundation with over 13 years of industry experience to deliver large-scale energy storage solutions across the globe.
In his current role at BYD Energy Storage, Wu has overseen the development and implementation of 3.73GWh of energy storage projects, positioning himself at the forefront of the renewable energy revolution. His leadership in the Saudi Bisha 500MW/2GWh Project demonstrates his ability to integrate advanced technologies and logistics planning to achieve ambitious goals. Under his direction, the project successfully deployed 488 battery cabinets and cutting-edge Energy Management Systems (EMS), ensuring seamless storage and distribution of power while contributing to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. This project serves as a model for other nations seeking to advance their energy infrastructure with renewable solutions and demonstrates the power of international collaboration in meeting global energy demands.
Wu’s expertise also proved invaluable in South Africa’s RMIPPP 1.13GWh/150MW Project, where he addressed energy shortages through innovative renewable energy solutions. By navigating technical complexities, coordinating international stakeholders, and ensuring timely project delivery, Wu’s contributions have provided a reliable and sustainable energy framework to support the region’s grid stability. His efforts have paved the way for additional renewable projects throughout the region, empowering local communities with more stable and sustainable energy access.
Wu’s influence extends into academia, where he recently published his acclaimed paper, “Design of EMS Scheduling Strategy for Large-Scale Energy Storage Power Plant Based on High-Performance Computing and Its Enhancement of Power System Stability Research.” His research introduces an innovative EMS scheduling strategy that utilizes high-performance vectorization techniques to optimize power grid operations. Achieving notable scheduling efficiency, Wu’s work significantly enhances energy dispatch performance, reduces power fluctuations, and minimizes backup times, offering a scalable solution to meet the demands of modern renewable energy systems.
Before joining BYD Energy Storage, Wu played a key role in international infrastructure development at Shenzhen Metro Group, where he oversaw Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa Light Rail Project, the country’s first urban light rail system. The project served as a model for successful global collaboration, improving urban transportation, creating economic opportunities, and strengthening local technical capacities through knowledge transfer.
