Discrimination remains a deeply rooted problem worldwide. According to a report by the Anti-Defamation League(ADL), a significant portion of U.S. adults hold negative views about Jews. Amid this pervasive issue, Virag Gulyas, a non-Jewish advocate, is making headway in addressing this concern. Her work with Jewish non-profits and her efforts to shift perceptions have garnered significant success and recognition. Here are three practical strategies that Virag shares for defeating discrimination.
Overcoming Personal Prejudices
Virag Gulyas was born and raised in a rather anti-Semitic environment. After an initial trigger with a relationship with an Israeli, she visited Israel, wrote an article that went viral. She started to dig deeper and deeper in her own prejudices which eventually led her to NYC to earn an MA in Jewish studies. Before going to college, she worked as a diplomat for the Hungarian government in Belgium. However, her journey to understanding took a crucial turn when she started working with an Jewish organizations. As she stated, “Something shifted in me when I went to Israel. I had the curiosity and the guts to visit when I had a bad view.”
- Eliminate Cancel Culture
Virag’s first strategy is to eliminate cancel culture. She believes that most prejudiced remarks stem from ignorance, not hatred. Recognizing this can lead to effective interventions. By understanding this, she has been able to transform her experiences and knowledge into a business that helps non-profits articulate their message and combat discrimination.
- Ask the Right Questions
The second strategy she offers is about asking the right questions. If faced with someone expressing anti-Semitic sentiments, Virag suggests inquiring if they understand the implications of what they’re saying. By engaging in conversation instead of confrontation, the chance for understanding and change increases. She advises, “If the person can listen, you may gain a friend and understanding by avoiding an argument. Patience and curiosity can help foster understanding.”
- Don’t Be Triggered – Pause.Â
Her third strategy is a reminder not to be triggered by prejudice. But rather learn to PAUSE. This allows space for dialogue and avoids escalating a potentially volatile situation. By maintaining composure, individuals can present an alternative perspective that challenges established prejudices.
Looking to the Future
Virag Gulyas’ mission extends into the future, with ambitious plans on her horizon. She aims to continue speaking engagements, especially at colleges and high schools. She also intends to study psychology for traumatized groups such as those in jails or foster care. She believes that understanding the psychological roots of discrimination can lead to more effective interventions.
In the face of adversity, Virag’s life serves as a reminder that we each have a role to play in the fight against discrimination. As she says, “Never underestimate your role in this collective struggle. Not everyone needs to be a journalist, speaker, or activist. Build a community around discussions. Be a decent human being.”
