In honor of Filipino American History Month, the Knights of Rizal (KOR) held a meaningful and inspiring event on October 27, 2024, at the Skokie Public Library in Illinois. Radmacher Hall became a space for community reflection, celebration, and commitment to the mission of preserving the values and legacy of Dr. José Rizal, a Philippine national hero. The occasion brought together members of KOR, local leaders, and guests, each joining to recognize the achievements and cultural contributions of Filipino Americans in the United States.
A Commemoration of Heritage and Brotherhood
The ceremony began with the American and Filipino national anthems, symbolizing a shared commitment to both countries. Sir Randy Famacion, KCR, led the anthems, setting a unifying tone for the event. Following this, Sir Mariano Santos, KGOR, Commander of the KOR Chicago Area, delivered an opening address that highlighted the event’s significance and paid homage to Dr. Rizal’s ideals of patriotism, cultural pride, and educational empowerment.
One heartfelt segment of the gathering was a tribute to departed members of the KOR who had dedicated their lives to the organization’s mission. Each name was read aloud, honoring the contributions and memories of the following brethren:

This solemn ceremony was accompanied by the song Hindi Ka Malilimutan, creating an atmosphere of respect and remembrance. Sir Wilfredo Obando and Don Santarinala led the rites, embodying the brotherhood and commitment that defines the Knights of Rizal.
Reflecting on History and Legacy

Dr. José Rizal’s influence extended beyond the Philippines, touching lives around the world and shaping democratic ideals. Sir Felix Gonzales, KGOR, presented on Rizal’s historic visit to the United States in 1888, a journey that deeply impacted his perspective on freedom and democracy. Adding a unique twist, Sir Consul Ryan Gener offered a resume-style presentation of Rizal’s life, capturing key milestones in Rizal’s career in a fresh, engaging format that resonated with the audience.
Sir Nick Gilana, KCR, then introduced the organizational structure of KOR, highlighting its mission and global reach. This explanation served as a reminder of the organization’s commitment to Rizal’s vision of unity, education, and cultural preservation. The event brought together members from the Maynilad Chapter, associated primarily with the Philippine Consulate in Chicago, and the Malaya Chapter, representing the broader Chicagoland area.
A significant moment in the program was the promotion of Sir Amando Bernal-Respicio Abellana Boncales to the role of Archivist, a position that reflects his dedication to preserving the historical records of KOR. His commitment underscores the importance of maintaining the heritage and ideals upon which the organization was built.
Honoring Contributions and Welcoming New Members
The Knights of Rizal also took the opportunity to recognize two distinguished women in the community, Janice Israel Delima and Mary Rose Ople from Gawad Kalinga, who are on the path to becoming members of the Ladies for Rizal. Mary Rose, an advocate for homeless shelters, attended to emphasize the value of community outreach and highlight her commitment to social initiatives that align with Rizal’s ideals. Their future induction into the Ladies for Rizal represents the inclusive nature of the organization and the mutual dedication to upholding Rizal’s legacy.
During the event, new members Ringo Tabaloc and Martyn Asker Orcine were formally inducted as First Degree Knights, marking their initiation into the KOR community. This ceremony, led by Sir Felix Gonzales, KGOR, reinforced the KOR’s dedication to cultivating future leaders inspired by Rizal’s values. Additionally, Sir Ylon Dulay Noly Dulay, KCR, and Sir Elywarto Gemina, KCR, assumed leadership roles as commanders of the Maynilad and Malaya Chapters, respectively, symbolizing the continuity and resilience of the KOR’s mission.
Women of Purpose: The Ladies for Rizal
The presence of women committed to advancing Rizal’s ideals was a focal point of the event. Janice Israel Delima and Mary Rose Ople, soon to be inducted as members of the Ladies for Rizal, bring a valuable perspective to the organization. The Ladies for Rizal work in tandem with the Knights, supporting causes related to education, cultural preservation, and community service. Their contributions reflect a shared mission transcending gender, embodying Rizal’s vision for a unified society committed to justice, learning, and cultural pride.
A Day of Unity and Inspiration

The Knights of Rizal event celebrated Filipino American History Month and reaffirmed Rizal’s enduring legacy. At the end of the program, attendees gathered for fellowship and shared reflections on the day’s meaningful moments, strengthening their dedication to the ideals of community service, integrity, and education.
