Feisty Chihuahua Sparks Dog Training in North Carolina

Louie Torres wasn’t always the face behind Charlotte, North Carolina’s leading dog training facility. In fact, his story starts in an unexpected place—his marketing agency. But it was Alfie, his partner Michelle’s 10-year-old chihuahua, who would ignite the spark that led to the creation of Obedient K9 Academy, recognized as a leading dog training facility by both Charlotte Magazine and The Charlotte Observer.

Alfie was no ordinary chihuahua. Fearful, anxious, and aggressive, he had bitten multiple people and created a whirlwind of stress in Louie and Michelle’s home when they moved in together. Despite reaching out to nearly a dozen trainers in Charlotte, only one agreed to help them. Senior dogs like Alfie, with such deep-seated behavioral issues, were often seen as “too far gone” by many in the field.

But Alfie’s story would take an extraordinary turn. With the right training, he made a complete 180-degree shift in behavior. The little dog that once ruled the house with his fear and aggression became a calmer, more balanced companion. Witnessing this transformation had a profound impact on Louie. Inspired by Alfie’s success, he decided to reimagine his career.

Louie didn’t just dabble in the pet industry; he dove in headfirst. He rebranded his successful marketing agency, fired his existing clients, and dedicated himself fully to the pet training world. His agency success soon spread across the internet, garnering attention from major publications. But it wasn’t just about business for Louie—he had discovered his true calling.

Mentoring with one of his dog training clients, Louie expanded his knowledge and skill set in the training field, eventually leading him to launch Obedient K9 Academy. What began as a personal journey with a feisty chihuahua has since grown into a thriving business, one that serves a vital role in the Charlotte community.

The impact of Obedient K9 Academy has been nothing short of remarkable. The academy has trained and placed an active patrol K9 for the Sheriff’s Department, worked with an official bat dog for the Charlotte Knights (a pro baseball affiliate of the Chicago White Sox), and helped thousands of local dogs struggling with reactivity, fear, and anxiety. But it’s not just about serving clients. Louie’s passion for rescue work is evident in the academy’s Free Foster Training Program, offered monthly to various rescue organizations and shelters, including Forgotten, Now Family Rescue and Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Control. This program, which trains foster dogs at no cost, has had a transformative effect on countless lives.

Given Louie’s background in business, it might seem inevitable that his dog training academy would be a success. But what truly sets him apart is his dedication to giving back. His philanthropic efforts are inspired by one of his mentors, Dan Fleyshman, founder of the World’s Largest Toy Drive. In the same spirit, Louie founded the Annual Holiday Dog Toy Drive, where he dresses as Santa and invites clients to take photos with their pets, all while gathering toy donations for rescue dogs in need. It’s a tradition that brings the community together and highlights Louie’s commitment to making a difference beyond the business world.

Though Alfie has since passed away, his legacy lives on through the work of Obedient K9 Academy. Louie often reflects on how that tiny, feisty chihuahua was the catalyst for a journey that would reshape the pet training industry in Charlotte. Today, Obedient K9 Academy stands not only as a premier dog training facility but also as a pillar of the community, one that leads with heart, purpose, and a commitment to both pets and their people.

From marketing mogul to dog training leader, Louie Torres has forever changed the landscape of dog training in Charlotte. And it all started with a chihuahua named Alfie.
