Renowned interior designer Fei Hu, the General Manager and Design Director of Shanghai Fengrui Design Engineering Co., Ltd., has been at the forefront of the interior design industry for over 20 years. His unique approach blends traditional Chinese cultural aesthetics with contemporary minimalist design, creating a signature style known as “Zen Oriental.” This innovative style has garnered Hu Fei numerous prestigious awards and accolades on the international stage, solidifying his position as a leading figure in the design world.
Fei Hu’s journey in interior design began at an early age, with a deep-rooted passion for art that later developed into a comprehensive understanding of interior design during his university years. His academic background, combined with practical experience gained through various internships and early career roles, allowed him to craft a unique design philosophy that emphasizes the integration of cultural heritage with modern functionality. Over the past two decades, he has honed his skills and expanded his expertise across various sectors, including commercial hotel spaces, residential design, office spaces, and public cultural projects. His work is characterized by a seamless integration of aesthetic beauty and practical functionality, with a strong emphasis on cultural heritage.
One of Fei Hu’s notable projects is the ” My home library ” in Shanghai, a community library that stands as a testament to his commitment to cultural innovation and social impact. As the lead designer, Fei Hu was instrumental in conceptualizing and bringing this project to life. The ” My home library ” is Shanghai’s first 24-hour community library operated through a government-enterprise partnership. Despite its modest size of just over 300 square meters, the library skillfully combines multiple functions, including a self-service book room, a citizen science and technology practice base, a volunteer autonomy base, and a recreational space. This multifunctional approach not only maximizes the utility of the space but also fosters a sense of community and cultural enrichment.

The library’s design integrates elements of traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern minimalist principles, creating a serene and inviting environment. Features such as natural materials, subtle lighting, and minimalist furnishings work together to create a tranquil atmosphere conducive to reading and learning. This project not only showcases Fei Hu’s ability to merge traditional cultural aesthetics with modern design but also serves as a model for future community cultural projects across the country. The design emphasizes accessibility and inclusivity, with spaces thoughtfully designed to accommodate a diverse range of users.
Since its opening in 2016, the ” My home library ” has received widespread acclaim for its innovative design and has significantly contributed to enhancing public cultural services in Shanghai. Under Fei Hu’s leadership, the project has expanded to include 30 libraries across the city, establishing ” My home library ” as a well-known public service brand. The design and operational model have been widely adopted, influencing the development of public reading spaces nationwide. This expansion highlights the project’s success and the positive impact it has had on the community, reflecting Fei Hu’s dedication to improving public services through design.

In addition to his work in cultural projects, Fei Hu’s portfolio includes numerous award-winning designs, such as the Zhengzhou National Conference Center and the Longhu Hotel, which have earned international recognition with honors like the 2024 MUSE Design Award Gold, the 2024 Italy A’ Design Award & competition Silver, and the New York Architecture Design Awards Silver. His expertise extends beyond creative design; he is also a pioneer in developing standardized design templates for residential and office public spaces, addressing a critical need in the industry. His efforts have been acknowledged with the 22 intellectual property certificates issued by the National Copyright Administration. These achievements underscore his commitment to advancing design standards and promoting innovation within the field.

Fei Hu’s contributions to the field of interior design are not limited to aesthetics. He is a strong advocate for sustainable and environmentally friendly design practices. His “Zen Oriental” style reflects a deep appreciation for simplicity and harmony with nature, aligning with contemporary sustainable development goals. This commitment to green design principles is evident in his work, which consistently demonstrates a balance between artistic expression and social responsibility. By incorporating sustainable materials, energy-efficient systems, and eco-friendly practices, Fei Hu ensures that his projects are both beautiful and environmentally conscious.
Recently, Fei Hu achieved another milestone by winning the Municipal Architecture category at the 2024 DNA Paris Design Awards. This globally recognized award, known for its rigorous standards, further solidifies Fei Hu’s reputation as a leading visionary in the interior design industry. The accolade not only highlights his outstanding contributions to the field but also underscores his ongoing commitment to advancing design and public cultural services.
As Fei Hu continues to explore new possibilities in design, his dedication ensures that his work makes a lasting impact on society. His influence extends beyond individual projects, shaping the future of interior design through his emphasis on cultural integration, sustainability, and innovative solutions.
