Illinois has seen a sharp increase in drug abuse and overdose deaths in recent years. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, there were 2,944 opioid overdose deaths in Illinois, an average of eight Illinois resident deaths per day. This represents a 33% increase from 2019 and is 2.2 times higher than homicides and 2.3 times higher than car accident deaths.
