Success in any field starts with a definitive step, and it originates from a specific passion or goal. It does not matter whether a person starts at an early age or later in life. People’s pasts do not necessarily dictate who they will be in the future – these only become supplemental and lay a groundwork for a more significant purpose that people will be serving later on. When browsing through the narratives of countless influential personalities, the common trademark is staying true to a firm identity and aligning both the mind and body towards a goal. The journey of James Best adds to the list of inspiring stories that prove just how crucial these trademarks are in overcoming the hurdles in life.
The Tennessee-native grew up in a rather solitary manner. Best never had childhood friends to socialize with as he would go on with his life traveling to and fro his school, ending his days all alone with only his family as companions. Living on a small farm in Madisonville, young James performed a variety of farm works. The physique that he unconsciously honed through the jobs awakened his eagerness to join sports events in his school. But he was forbidden to. With this, Best spent his first 18 years loathing the treatment of his family towards his passion, describing it as a dreadful memory.
The career he would later excel in started opening for him after he graduated high school. Gaining independence, Best decided to enroll in the only gym that Madisonville had to offer, Modern Fitness. But shortly after he got a gym membership in Modern Fitness, a new gym opened up called Anytime Fitness. He decided to switch gyms after that.
At Anytime Fitness, he gained the attention of his peers and instructors with the professional ethics he acquired from his past life and the sheer will he exhibited in all his sessions. Eventually, he started expanding his social and professional circles until he got accepted in a semi-pro football team – his dexterity record-breaking.
“Within four years, I was the biggest, strongest, most well-known guy in the small town gym of Madisonville. This taught me one thing. Your past doesn’t have to equal [to] your future,” says Best. He attributes the heights he has reached over the years to a quote by Dwayne Johnson that he firmly holds: “I like to use the hard times in the past to motivate me today.”
His career gained latitude after training with WWE Superstar Glenn Jacobs, aka Kane, and wrestling trainer Dr. Tom Prichard, in the Jacobs Prichard Wrestling Academy at Knoxville, Tennessee. Under the supervision of prominent names in wrestling, his skills parred with many physical athletes in the field. Best wrestles for USA Championship Wrestling in Middle and West Tennessee.
Best aspires to climb the ranks of professionals who sport top athletic brands and become an unforgettable face in sports entertainment. He believes that by continuing to train and burn with passion, there is no limit.
“Doubt and fear is a huge problem most people face, and the further I make it from where I came from, the more of an impact I can have. I want people to believe in themselves because that, and just a smudge of luck, is all it takes to be great,” he concludes.
