Documentary filmmaking is a constantly evolving industry, where only a few are truly exceptional and capable of capturing stories that resonate with people worldwide. Lyuwei Chen is one of those exceptional filmmakers who has made a name for herself through her distinctive storytelling approach and her dedication to bringing significant stories to the forefront. This article will explore the remarkable journey of Lyuwei Chen, her achievements, and her unwavering passion for documentary filmmaking.

The Early Days: A Fusion of Music and Film

Lyuwei Chen’s journey into the world of documentary filmmaking began with a unique fusion of music and film. As an image lover, she started learning the piano at a young age by following her piano professor mom and became a classical pianist. She pursued her undergraduate and first master’s degree in Music Editing for Film, TV, and Radio at the Communication University of China in Beijing. At the time, she had the opportunity to work as an assistant director for China Central TV’s music documentary series, Folk Song China. This experience triggered her passion for combining visual imagery with music. It was during this time that she discovered her innate talent for storytelling through the lens of a camera.

From TV Stations to Award-Winning Filmmaker

After completing her education, Lyuwei Chen embarked on a career as a documentarian. She worked as a documentary director and editor at various TV stations, where she honed her skills and discovered her passion for sharing the untold stories of individuals from all walks of life. She interviewed a wide range of people, from unprivileged citizens to disabled children. Reporting their stories not only allowed her to share what she had seen but also to find her own voice. It was her dedication to storytelling that earned her the prestigious “Best Documentary” award at the Peony TV Awards, the highest TV award in Zhejiang province in China, for her long-form documentary film, “The Strength of a Father.”

A Scholarly Pursuit of Excellence

After winning prestigious awards in the documentary field, Lyuwei Chen was hired by Zhejiang Business College as a faculty member and by Zhejiang Communication University as an adjunct professor, teaching filmmaking. She received tenure as an Associate Professor in Film and Drama Studies in 2017, which made her the youngest tenured professor at the university. She guided students to winning many national and international awards. She was a leader in both academia and the documentary filmmaking industry in Zhejiang province. However, her pursuit of excellence didn’t stop with her early success. In 2019, she was awarded a full scholarship to be a visiting scholar at Michigan State University, where she delved deeper into the art of documentary production. She sat in on the classes of award winning professors and documentarians, like Howard Bossen, Swarnavel Eswaran, and John J. Valadez. It was during this time that she made the pivotal decision to elevate her professional abilities in documentary filmmaking.
