Iulia Erhan is making waves in the corporate communications world with her hands-on approach to research, focusing on how communication strategies can make or break critical corporate events. With a background in finance and corporate communications, Iulia’s work is particularly relevant to the investor relations (IR) industry, where clear and effective communication is essential.
Iulia’s academic journey began with an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Accounting from the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). This foundational education equipped her with a strong grasp of financial operations, providing a strong base for her subsequent studies and professional work. Building on this, she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Finance from Baruch College, City University of New York. This program deepened her understanding of financial markets and investments, which would later play a critical role in her research and professional endeavors.
Iulia’s pursuit of higher education didn’t stop there. Recognizing the growing importance of effective communication in the business world, she went on to earn a Master of Arts (MA) in Corporate Communications from Baruch College. During this time, Iulia was awarded the Arnold Picker Excellence Award in Communications Studies, which recognized her outstanding academic achievements and contributions to the field.
In today’s volatile market conditions, the trend of public companies going private has gained momentum. Companies are increasingly choosing to leave the public markets in search of greater operational flexibility, reduced regulatory scrutiny, and other strategic benefits. Despite this growing trend, Iulia noticed that there was surprisingly little research available on the communication strategies necessary during these transitions—an area that is crucial for maintaining stakeholder trust and ensuring a smooth process.
Seeing this gap, Iulia decided to focus her master’s thesis on this very topic. Titled “The Role and Impact of the Communications Department and Investor Relations Functions on the Process of Privatization,” her research delved into the challenges that companies face when transitioning from public to private ownership. Her thesis couldn’t have been more timely, as it addressed an emerging issue in corporate governance that had been largely overlooked in academic literature.
Iulia’s research involved a thorough examination of how communication strategies can either support or undermine the privatization process. She explored the role of the communications department and investor relations teams in managing stakeholder expectations, mitigating risks, and maintaining market confidence throughout the transition. Her findings emphasized the importance of transparent and consistent communication during this critical period—a time when misinformation can easily spread, potentially damaging a company’s reputation and market value.
One of the key takeaways from Iulia’s research is the crucial role that investor relations (IR) and communications professionals play during privatization. Her work highlights how these teams need to be deeply involved in the decision-making process to ensure that all stakeholders are kept informed and engaged. By adopting proactive communication strategies, companies can navigate the complexities of privatization more effectively, minimizing disruption and aligning stakeholder interests.
For IR and communications professionals, Iulia’s findings offer practical guidance on how to manage these challenging transitions. She emphasizes the need for early and continuous engagement with stakeholders, clear and consistent messaging, and the use of multiple communication channels to effectively reach diverse audiences. These strategies are essential for maintaining trust and ensuring that the company’s reputation remains intact during the privatization process.
In addition to her thesis, Iulia is currently exploring the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria on corporate communications. She is particularly interested in how AI can enhance communication strategies during critical corporate events like mergers, acquisitions, and privatizations. Iulia’s research aims to provide practical insights into how companies can leverage AI to manage ESG issues more effectively, helping them navigate the increasingly complex demands of modern business environments.
Iulia Erhan is bringing a fresh, practical perspective to the world of corporate communications. Her research on privatization offers valuable insights that can help IR and communications professionals navigate the complexities of these transitions with greater confidence and success. As she continues to explore the role of AI and ESG in corporate communications, Iulia is well-positioned to influence how companies approach communication during critical corporate events, ensuring they remain resilient and responsive in an ever-changing world.
