From Grassroots to Global: How ‘Legend of Destruction’ Helped Foster Connections Through Screenings

Eunice Tan, a 24-year-old Senior Vice President, has been working alongside 7th Art Releasing, an independent arthouse film distribution company. The organization of 130 screenings for Legend of Destruction emerged from a shared vision among the filmmakers, including director Gidi Dar and various partners, who saw potential in creating connections among Jewish communities worldwide. According to Eunice Tan, “The commemorative day was a meaningful chance to bring people together, reflecting the historical events tied to this day.” This initiative leveraged the film’s powerful storytelling, endorsements from prominent organizations, and the cultural expertise of Udy Epstein, CEO of 7th Art Releasing, contributing to the re-release of the new English version being widely appreciated.

The use of grassroots distribution strategies played a key role in addressing the challenges of bringing a niche film to a global audience. Tan highlighted that “Community screenings and partnerships with local organizations allowed conventional barriers to be bypassed.” These methods fostered deeper connections and personalized experiences tailored to the unique cultural contexts of each audience. While many communities viewed the screenings as educational opportunities, others engaged with them to build a shared sense of connection. Despite financial and logistical challenges, the increasing acknowledgment of films as valuable cultural resources may continue to unlock new opportunities for independent cinema.

This approach aligns with a broader movement toward globalizing niche films. Through multilingual subtitles and culturally significant themes, Legend of Destruction was able to resonate deeply with Jewish communities worldwide. Tan noted that “The goal wasn’t mass appeal but rather creating a meaningful experience for those already familiar with the film’s themes.” This case illustrates how niche films can connect audiences globally while remaining true to their cultural roots.

The ability to transition seamlessly between roles—whether as director, producer, or senior VP—has been a defining factor in Tan’s success. “Each role has provided valuable insights into approaching projects holistically, balancing both creative and business aspects,” Tan remarked. Early artistic pursuits, combined with extensive experience in commercial filmmaking, instilled a balance between creative expression and practical constraints. This adaptability proved vital during projects such as directing a 10-episode Penang Global Tourism documentary for Penang, Malaysia, which involved managing tight schedules, inexperienced actors, and stakeholder expectations. Tan emphasized that “Creativity is not just about storytelling—it involves problem-solving, managing logistics, and fulfilling expectations.”

Grassroots screenings appear to offer opportunities to bridge cultural divides and foster loyal audiences. Events like the Legend of Destruction screenings can spark conversations, educate, and raise awareness. Current projects include The Other, directed by Joy Sela, a film promoting peace and shared humanity between Israelis and Palestinians. These screenings, often conducted in partnership with universities and institutions, utilize film as a tool for education and community-building, emphasizing universal themes of humanity.

Balancing multiple roles effectively involves viewing them as interconnected. Tan stated, “Understanding the creative process facilitates clear communication with filmmakers and stakeholders, ensuring alignment toward common goals.” This integrated approach fosters innovation and collaboration, enabling challenges to be addressed holistically and meaningful results to be delivered.

For professionals seeking to expand their skill sets, the advice is to step out of their comfort zones, remain open to learning, and develop a resilient mindset. Versatility enhances creativity and innovation while building resilience and leadership. As Tan pointed out, “The higher the climb, the greater the demands. Hard work intensifies, but it is through these efforts that growth occurs, ultimately inspiring others.”
