New York, NY – July 1, 2024 – Dathan Jones, a name synonymous with versatility and creativity, has made significant strides in various fields, including music, mental health, film, fashion, and community development. His journey, which began in the vibrant world of hip hop, has since evolved to encompass a broad spectrum of artistic and humanitarian endeavors.
Dathan’s artistic journey began with hip hop, heavily influenced by family cyphers and early storytelling from legends like Slick Rick and Biz Markie. “My earlier influences stem from my family members and friends having hip hop cyphers and having opportunities to share my early writings as an adolescent,” Dathan recalls. These foundational experiences shaped his approach to storytelling and performance, paving the way for his multifaceted career.
Dathan’s tenure in the music industry exposed him to the challenges artists face, helping him develop essential skills in customer service, communication, and networking. These experiences became the cornerstone for his ventures in film, fashion, and community projects. “My experience in the music industry helped me to experience some of the gaps that artists face, which helped me to develop keystone habits,” he explains.
The tragic events of 9/11 catalyzed a profound career shift for Dathan. Inspired by a Red Cross social worker, he pursued a career in mental health therapy. “Losing my job as a Greeter due to the tragic events in 9/11 led me to a social worker that was working for the Red Cross. He inspired me to explore the world of Social Work,” Dathan shares. Today, he integrates his artistic background into his therapy practice, using creativity to help clients build self-esteem and executive functioning skills.
As a filmmaker, Dathan is drawn to exploring the dichotomy of good and evil, as well as the themes of unity and integrity. His recent projects, including the short films “Movement the Movie” and its sequel “Movement,” reflect these interests. He also hints at a new series of short films set to release this fall.
Dathan’s foray into fashion was sparked by the slang term “#ivit,” which evolved into a clothing line after a fan expressed interest in a shirt he wore during a performance. “#ivit represents Hip Hop, urban culture, community, and the DJ, all elements of Dathan Jones,” he says. His clothing line embodies his personal style and artistic vision, inspiring other independent artists to protect their art and wealth through self-sufficiency and grassroots networking.
The NYC Earth Day Fashion Show, created by Dathan, is a unique platform that combines eco-friendly fashion with community inclusivity. “The show encompasses highlighting ‘everyday people’ in the community that aren’t usually offered opportunities to showcase their talent and art,” Dathan explains. By selecting artists and designers with no prior experience, he aims to inspire and uplift those who have been overlooked.
Balancing his diverse ventures, Dathan attributes his success to strategic planning and executive functioning skills. “Most of the events are broken down into seasons,” he notes. His drive to keep expanding his creative horizons is fueled by unexpected opportunities and the support of his followers. “The new horizons remind me of the book, ‘The Alchemist,'” he reflects.
Through his platforms, Dathan has helped numerous artists gain their first exposure, fostering a sense of community and mutual encouragement. “An artist reminded me that I was the first person to ever play his song on a radio show,” he recalls, highlighting the lasting impact of his support.
Looking to the future, Dathan envisions a continued intersection of his careers, ensuring that all his ventures flourish. “I’m exploring ways to cross-market them all. Ensuring they all stay watered so that they all bloom in a timely fashion,” he concludes.
