When Benji Kushwaha identified a gap in the market for tailored cleaning solutions, he took action. He established White Spot Group in 2014, a company that has since grown into a leading provider of customized cleaning and facilities management services across Australia.
White Spot Group started as a small venture but quickly gained traction due to its commitment to personalized service and attention to detail. “I recognized the need to provide cleaning solutions that were tailored to each customer’s needs and specific to each site,” Benji explains. This customer-centric approach has allowed the company to expand its services from small organizations to large commercial and warehousing operations. The focus on staff training and responsiveness to client needs has been a cornerstone of White Spot Group’s success, delivering superior cleaning and facilities management solutions nationwide.
Here, Benji shares three steps he took that contributed greatly to his entrepreneurial success.
Building a New Team
One of the initial steps to success for Benji was building a solid team. Starting a business with just one or two people poses significant challenges, but Benji understood the importance of scaling through a strong foundation. “The biggest challenge is building up the team because the service industry is all about people,” he shares. For Benji, investing in the right people was the first step in any new region or territory. “Once you build a foundation, then comes the capital or investments, and then the business starts coming in.”
To effectively build his team, Benji focused on hiring individuals who aligned with the company’s values and had the potential to grow with the business. This approach not only ensured quality service but also created a loyal workforce committed to the company’s vision.
Strategic Investment in Resources
Investing in resources is the second critical step Benji highlights. This includes initial startup costs, infrastructure, and extensive training programs. “Initially, there will be a lot of investment compared with the return, especially in a new geography,” Benji notes. However, these investments are essential for setting up a sustainable operation.
Benji’s strategy involves careful planning and resource allocation to ensure the business can support its growth. By investing in state-of-the-art equipment, staff training and emerging technology, White Spot Group has been able to maintain high standards of service and meet the diverse needs of its clients.
Expanding Services and Creating an Ecosystem
The third step in Benji’s strategy is expanding services and creating an ecosystem for clients. As the company grew, it began to add various services based on client demands. “We wanted to see how we could add value,” Benji says. This meant looking beyond the core services and exploring additional offerings that could benefit clients, such as specific periodic work, gardening, hygiene services and consumables.
By continually seeking to add value, White Spot Group has created a comprehensive service ecosystem that meets a wide range of client needs. This not only helps in retaining clients but also opens up new revenue streams. Benji believes that understanding and anticipating client needs is crucial for sustained growth.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Leadership
Benji’s journey has not been without its challenges. Geographic expansion and service diversification each come with their own set of difficulties. “If you are looking at a new territory, the hardest part is building up the team,” Benji explains. Additionally, making significant investments with uncertain returns can be daunting.
However, Benji emphasizes the importance of leadership in overcoming these challenges. Delegating tasks, building a skilled team, and fostering a growth mindset are essential for scaling a business. “You can’t be everywhere; you can’t be doing everything,” he adds, highlighting the necessity of trusting and empowering his team.
Looking Ahead to Future Plans
As White Spot Group continues to grow, Benji is focused on further scaling the business through strategic acquisitions and expanding into new markets. “We are looking to acquire some commercial operations and scale them,” he shares. By acquiring established businesses, Benji aims to integrate and enhance them with White Spot Group’s existing expertise and infrastructure.
Reflecting on his journey, Benji acknowledges the importance of seizing opportunities and planning for the future. “There is a lot of opportunity, but it’s about grabbing the right one at the right time,” he advises. Benji continues to steer his company toward new heights, embodying the principles of effective business leadership and growth.
