Leadership plays a critical role in the transportation industry, where high-pressure situations and complex operations demand skilled and experienced professionals to steer the course. Effective leadership in transportation is essential to ensuring the safety and efficiency of transportation systems, as well as fostering a strong organizational culture that encourages innovation and adaptability.
Michael Sakata, President and CEO of the Maryland Transportation Builders & Materials Association (MTBMA), is one of the more innovative and well-respected leaders in the transportation community. In his 5+ years leading MTBMA, he has led initiatives that have created future growth opportunities and streamlined his company.
Michael leads with a strategy called the “three C’s”: Continue, Collaborate, and Connect. This philosophy underscores his strategic vision for MTBMA. “We continued MTBMA’s valuable efforts to date and built on its focus on safety initiatives, training, and providing opportunities for networking and making positive impacts in our space,” Sakata explains. His ability to maintain continuity while driving innovation has been pivotal in MTBMA’s recent successes.
Under Sakata’s leadership, MTBMA has achieved record membership growth, advocating for business owners and their more than 35,000 workers. This growth is a testament to his ability to create an inclusive and forward-thinking association. By fostering a culture of collaboration, Sakata ensures that MTBMA remains a strong network for its members. He stresses the importance of collaboration alliances with other organizations in the transportation space; these enhancements are felt both in Maryland’s transportation industry at both state and federal levels.
A notable example of Sakata’s collaborative approach is his role in creating the Together for Transportation Funding (TTF) Coalition. This broad-based coalition, comprising ten different associations, focuses on securing sustainable long-term transportation funding. “The TTF Coalition combines collective memberships and efforts, working together to fight for funding, all to the benefit of the traveling public,” Sakata states. This initiative highlights his ability to unite diverse stakeholders towards a common goal.
Sakata’s leadership extends beyond advocacy and collaboration. He is also deeply committed to leveraging technology to enhance association management. By incorporating digital solutions, he has streamlined processes, improved member engagement, and ensured that MTBMA’s operations are efficient and effective. “We focus on digital transformation while still going back to basics by evaluating our core fundamentals and values around why our association was created,” Sakata notes. This approach has allowed MTBMA to adapt and thrive, even amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
With workforce development being a more important factor, Sakata has made initiatives that are aimed towards developing and creating young industry leaders. The “40 Under 40 Program,” is aimed at connecting young leaders with mentors. This helps provide the traits to lead and create innovation within the industry. Also, small gatherings with members and local district engineers create opportunities for interactions and all of these combined further strengthen the transportation community.
Sakata’s leadership during the pandemic was particularly noteworthy. Serving on the Maryland Transportation Secretary’s COVID recovery task force, he was instrumental in addressing member concerns about safety, funding, and operational challenges. “Transportation was declared an essential business, and through communications with this task force, I was able to guide my members on key issues,” Sakata explains. His proactive approach ensured that transportation workers could continue their critical work, supporting the broader community’s needs.
Looking towards the future, Sakata remains committed to fostering innovation, enhancing member services, and advocating for sustainable funding solutions. His leadership style, characterized by a blend of continuity, collaboration, and technological integration, has positioned MTBMA as a leading voice in the transportation sector. As Sakata continues to drive strategic growth and innovation, MTBMA is well-equipped to meet the evolving needs of its members and the broader industry.
