There are new female rappers popping up every day, but there’s one that sticks out vividly in my mind who calls herself The Black Diamond, also known as Iamtheblackdiamond, on Instagram. Her story? Growing up, she endured the ridicule of having a drug-addicted mother. She was raised by her grandmother and never knew who her father was.
I was able to listen to some of her music, and I was instantly blown away. Her tone, her charisma with words and her Tennessee country accent is mesmerizing. Not only is this artist extremely funny and comedic, Black Diamond has made a massive stamp in the music industry with her latest single titled “It’s Givin,” featuring reality TV star Queen Just Brittany of Love and Hip Hop Atlanta. Despite her history, she’s an artist through and through. Her dedication to her craft, as well as her talent in mixing unique, sultry tones with a vibrant energy that’ll keep your toes tingling to dance, is a feat of genius.
Born Dionna Collins in Nashville, Tennessee, she has been no stranger to the music industry. She released her second mixtape, The Black Print, in 2016 following a tragic car accident with her girlfriend, Robin Taylor, which left Taylor in a wheelchair. While embarking on this difficult
journey together, they continued to build and brand Black Diamond into a star.
Most people laughed at them when they said they would make it big in the music industry by
teasing and jokingly calling them Lil Kim & Biggie. Taylor was the primary supporter and believer in Black Diamond’s career; determined to make their dreams come true, Black Diamond moved to Atlanta after being homeless, where she has now skyrocketed to fame.
Recently, the artist has been troubled by the death of her long-time partner as Taylor was killed on October 16, 2022, by a family member at her home in Tennessee just days after celebrating the success of Black Diamond’s hit single “It’s Givin” being placed on radio.
In the midst of this tragedy, Black Diamond has been co-signed by one of the industry’s biggest DJs, Dj Holiday. Her music is now being heard by over 5 million listeners across the US on radio airwaves.
