Trick Films, a new production company from Michael Trucco that aims to bring powerful narratives to the screen, has recently announced its acquisition of “Schoolboy,” an intense and gripping new series co-created by Patrick Cox and Clay Baird. This acquisition marks another milestone for Trick Films, showcasing their dedication to high-quality storytelling and ability to recognize compelling, raw narratives that resonate with audiences.
“Schoolboy” is a series inspired by actual events, set against the backdrop of 1990s Memphis, a city rife with racial tension and gang wars. The series follows the tumultuous journey of Kenny Harpole, a young football prodigy whose promising future is abruptly shattered by a career-ending injury. Faced with the sudden loss of his dreams and desperate to provide for his family, Kenny takes a job as a bouncer at a strip club, unknowingly stepping into the perilous world of the redneck mafia.
The core of “Schoolboy” lies in its authentic and raw portrayal of Kenny’s descent into the criminal underworld. The series is not just a crime drama but a profoundly personal story of loss, survival, and the harsh realities of life in a city divided by race and power. Kenny’s journey from a hopeful football star to a reluctant enforcer for the mafia is fraught with moral dilemmas, intense conflicts, and the constant threat of violence.
Michael Trucco, one of the driving forces behind Trick Films, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Schoolboy’s raw and authentic storytelling is truly captivating. It’s a story that grips you from the start and doesn’t let go.” PJ Haarsma, co-founder of Trick Films, added, “We love the depth and complexity of the characters; it’s a powerful narrative that resonates on many levels. The intensity and authenticity of this story are what drew us to it.”

“Schoolboy” is structured as a 10-episode series. Each one-hour episode will capture the gritty, dangerous environment of 1990s Memphis and features a diverse cast of complex and compelling characters:
Co-founder Michael Trucco is known for his portrayal of ‘Samuel T. Anders’ in the sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica. He is currently recurring on the CBS drama Fire Country and recently starred in Mike Flanagan’s limited series The Fall of the House of Usher (Netflix). Next up, Trucco can be seen alongside Stanley Tucci in the upcoming Russo Brothers’ film The Electric State and a series regular in the BET+ series Average Joe. Trucco’s partner, PJ Haarsma, the founder of Redbear Films, is an Emmy-winning producer and distinguished author. Their collaboration on “Schoolboy” brings together their vast experience and passion for storytelling.
Haarsma’s previous work includes the successful series “Con Man” (now on Amazon), which received two Emmy nominations. Trucco’s extensive acting career and his involvement in various high-profile projects add significant value to Trick Films’ productions. Their combined expertise assures to bring “Schoolboy” to life with the same dedication and intensity that define their past work.
The excitement and passion expressed by Trucco and Haarsma highlight the potential of “Schoolboy” to become a standout addition to the world of crime dramas.
As Michael Trucco aptly put it, “I wanted to be part of bringing Patrick’s unique story and experiences to the screen.” The creators of “Schooboy” are equally excited. Working with Michael and PJ is a dream. Both are very passionate about this project; without PJ’s encouragement years ago, we would never have finished it. I’m so happy that it has all come full circle and will move forward with him,” stated co-creator Patrick Cox, whose life the story is based on.
