Despite the decades and centuries spent working to bring equality, women still find themselves greatly restricted by the fragility of men’s egos. Tired of watching other women held back, a group of women banded together to create an organization that is driven to encourage women’s empowerment. The Burning Bra was formed with the sole purpose of supporting and attending to the needs of women everywhere.
The Burning Bra is a passion project founded by mother and daughters team Monica Morgan, Britt Taylor, and Ashley Meador. The three of them established Burning Bra to become a nonprofit organization to extend their reach and help women at home, work, and their communities. “We are excited by this project,” Monica shared enthusiastically, “And it means so much to me because having spent the majority of my career in off-campus housing for college communities, this career choice poised the opportunity for me to have met and impact a number of women.”
Monica’s goal is to use their platform to bolster a sense of community, offering opportunities for females today to feel empowered and rejuvenated with the conviction that they can do anything they set their minds to. Monica and her daughters have assembled a team of capable and passionate women who lift each other up.
They settled on the name The Burning Bra after the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s and 70s. While popular folklore says women burned their bras during protests, the truth showed that while women burned other items, only a few actually burned their bras— the women who did not walk around without wearing one instead. While most people ridicule the act of burning the bra, it symbolizes freedom from men — a stand against restriction and allowing them to hold women back.
The Burning Bra nonprofit organization runs entirely on support donations. The funds they amass go directly towards helping women in the workplace, home, and the community. Burning Bra also educates women about empowerment through conferences, providing a networking platform, and amplifying voices to the less privileged. Additionally, they support foster and adoptive parents by providing them with first-week home programs, clothing donations, and emotional support. Burning Bra understands how women empowerment does not just cover women building their careers. They also reach mothers and wives. “Our nonprofit supports our communities through providing resources for domestic violence victims and survivors, voting, and more by partnering with fellow nonprofits.”
Monica Morgan and her daughters strive to dispel the stigma that only the young can create a business with their organization. They want to encourage women of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds to gather the courage and confidence needed to follow their dreams. Despite the belief that most businesses fail in their first year, The Burning Bra has managed to endure so far.
Monica and The Burning Bra aim to establish a community of women banding together to empower and encourage one another to believe, achieve, and exceed their wildest dreams. Additionally, they plan to hold virtual conferences throughout the year with an annual live conference as their community grows.
