On September 4, Venice welcomed the premiere of The Basics of Philosophy, bringing together the film’s creative and production team for an intimate pre-premiere gathering followed by the red carpet. Featuring a special appearance by Richard Gere and backed by an acclaimed team of filmmakers, the premiere became one of the memorable cinematic moments of this year’s Venice Film Festival, celebrating both the film itself and the people who brought it to life.
“A Monumental Moment in Venice”
There are moments in this business when you have to stop, look around, and appreciate exactly where the journey has taken you.
For us, standing at the Venice Film Festival celebrating the world premiere of The Basics of Philosophy was one of those moments.
As Brando Eaton, Richie Walls, and Landon Ash, representing SEEN Entertainment, we have each spent years building careers in this industry. But being part of a film written and directed by Paul Schrader, with Martin Scorsese joining the project as an executive producer, carries a significance thatis hard to put into words.
These filmmakers helped shape American cinema.
The creative history between Schrader and Scorsese stretches back decades through films including Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and The Last Temptation of Christ. Their films have never been afraid to venture into uncomfortable territory, to explore morality, guilt, faith, violence, and the darker contradictions of human nature.
The Basics of Philosophy proudly continues that tradition.
At its center is a man forced to confront the realities of an inexcusable act from his past. What begins as a reckoning with guilt becomes something much more unsettling: an examination of whether redemption has limits.
Can someone who has committed a monstrous act genuinely change? Does remorse matter when it cannot undo the damage inflicted on another person? Is forgiveness something that can ever truly be earned, or must monstrous actions ultimately have monstrous consequences?
Schrader does not offer the audience an easy answer. Instead, the film asks us to live inside those questions.
Experiencing that story in Venice, at one of the world’s great celebrations of cinema, made an already meaningful project extraordinary.
And then came a moment we will never forget.
As the film ended, the audience rose.
We stood there through what must have been nearly ten minutes of applause alongside the people who brought this story to life, Paul Schrader, Bill Pullman, Sofia Boutella, Dana Delany, Jack Huston, Daniel Zovatto, and the incredible team behind the film.
For those minutes, we simply tried to take it all in.
Looking around that theater, standing beside artists of this caliber while a Venice audience celebrated something we had all helped bring to the screen, was a monumental moment in our careers.
For SEEN Entertainment, it also represented something larger. We have always wanted to build a company capable of participating in ambitious filmmaking, projects driven not only by entertainment but by distinctive filmmakers and stories that leave audiences discussing what they have seen long after the credits roll.
Seeing our names alongside Paul Schrader and Martin Scorsese on a film like The Basics of Philosophy is an extraordinary honor, but it also motivates what comes next.
