Pianist Petra Persolja concluded a milestone year in her career with an exultant performance at Carnegie Hall on November 30, 2024. As the recipient of the First Prize and Judges Distinction Award in the 2024 American Protégé Concerto Competition, Petra delivered a passionate and fiery performance with a captivating interpretation of her favorite composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. This event marked a defining moment in her journey as a musician, showcasing her dedication and talent on one of the world’s most prestigious stages.

The American Protégé Concerto Competition, known for its rigorous standards, saw its largest-ever pool of applicants in 2024, with musicians hailing from nine countries including the United States, Canada, and South Korea. Petra’s win not only secured her a performance at Carnegie Hall but also distinguished her as a standout talent among a global roster of competitors. Reflecting on this achievement, Petra shared, “The real award was the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall. That is the biggest reward for all the hard work over the years. The experience is worth so much more than any trophy.”

The recital featured top winners from various instrument and age categories. Speaking about the experience, she described the surreal moment of stepping onto the stage, saying, “There’s this pivotal moment when you get on stage and see rows of familiar faces who traveled from all over the U.S. to support you. Within seconds, the nervousness transformed into gratefulness, and then it’s just you and the music.”

This performance was the culmination of an eventful year for Petra. In October, she was honored with the Leigh Weimers Emerging Artists Award by the San Jose Rotary Club. Reflecting on her journey, Petra noted the significance of returning to the stage after a hiatus to focus on her family. “I only stepped back onto the stage again last December after having my daughter,” she shared. “I couldn’t have imagined being here today, only a year later. A good environment surely makes you grow!”

Petra’s remarkable achievements are underscored by her versatile musicianship and a dynamic approach to performance. Holding a PhD in Piano Performance, she has won numerous accolades, including top prizes at the International Liszt Competition in Los Angeles, the International Piano Competition Francesco Forgione in Italy, and the National Music Competition of the Republic of Slovenia. Her career reflects a blend of classical training and modern versatility, which she channels into her business, Platinum Pianist.
