Jeremias Di Polito: Innovating Uruguayan Music with Jazz Fusion and Electric Guitar

Twice honored with the prestigious “Premios Nacionales de la Musica” in Uruguay in the jazz fusion category, Uruguayan guitarist Jeremias Di Polito is a musician known for his innovative music. His approach blends traditional Uruguayan music with modern techniques and styles, making him a unique voice in his country.

In recent years, Di Polito has collaborated with various renowned artists and groups such as Nair Mirabrat, the Juan Ibarra Quintet, Mateo Ottonello, Manuel Contrera, and Hernan Peyrou, among others. These collaborations have allowed him to explore a wide range of musical expressions, further enriching his repertoire. His deep understanding of different styles, from jazz and blues to classical and folk, has made him the musician artists look for un Uruguay when it comes to collaborations.

Currently, Jeremias is working on a solo guitar EP, which will be released in 2025. This ambitious project will feature his own arrangements and reinterpretations of classic works by some of Uruguay’s most important composers, including Osiris Rodríguez Castillos, Amalia de la Vega, Eduardo Fabini, and Alfredo Zitarrosa. These composers have played a significant role in shaping the country’s musical heritage, and Di Polito aims to offer a fresh perspective on their work through the lens of the electric guitar.

His decision to focus on solo guitar for this EP is deeply rooted in his personal connection to the instrument. Coming from a family of three generations of guitarists, Di Polito has always been close to the guitar and its rich tradition.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Di Polito’s upcoming project is his decision to reinterpret traditional Uruguayan music through the electric guitar. His goal is to bridge the gap between the rich musical traditions of Uruguay and the modern elements he has incorporated throughout his career. Jeremias wants to bring a modern vision to Uruguay’s musical roots.

For Di Polito, this EP is more than just a tribute; it’s a challenge to take the essential elements of traditional Uruguayan music and transform them into something personal and new. He acknowledges the fine line between respecting the original compositions and adding his unique touch, but he believes that finding the balance is what makes the project so artistically fulfilling.

Jeremias Di Polito is no stranger to recording. His discography includes two previous albums: “Jeremias Di Polito Quinteto” (2014) and “Cantos y Danzas del Folklore Imaginario” (2018). The former, recorded with his quintet, features prominent musicians of his generation and was nominated for a Graffiti Award for Best Jazz Album. The track “Encuentro” was also awarded by the MEC at the National Music Awards. The album was presented at venues in Montevideo as well as at the International Jazz a la Calle Festival.

His 2018 solo EP, Cantos y Danzas del Folklore Imaginario, is a deeply experimental work that fuses blues and ambient music, creating an introspective atmosphere that stands out for its meditative qualities. Although it reflects a different period in his musical evolution, Di Polito feels a special connection to this project and is planning a re-release, both digitally and physically. For him, this EP represents a distinct moment in his career, an exploration of minimalist, meditative music where each piece is associated with a specific color and element.

Now, ready to finish his upcoming EP Jeremias wants to innovate while staying connected to his roots. His work offers a fresh perspective on Uruguayan music, blending tradition with modernity in a way that is both respectful and daring. With his background in jazz, blues, and classical guitar, Di Polito became a referent in the modern music industry in Uruguay.
