How Former WBC Champion Walter Sarnoi is Impacting His Community After Retirement

By: Shawn Mars

Just six years ago, Walter “School Boy” Sarnoi held the WBC Super Featherweight championship belt after finishing Geovani Sanchez Plascencia in the sixth round. Since stepping away from the ring, Sarnoi has shifted his focus toward serving his community in a different capacity—drawing on his training as a licensed paramedic and firefighter to assist others in practical, everyday ways. He has also spoken about his ongoing goal of mentoring young athletes, particularly those who may share a similar background or face comparable challenges.

The son of Thai and Lao immigrants, Walter Sarnoi grew up in Monterey Park, California, where he came to understand that boxing was a meaningful part of his family history. His father had also competed professionally, facing opponents such as Masahiko “Fighting” Harada—a prominent name in Asian boxing circles who went on to become a celebrated figure in Japan. As a child, Sarnoi was naturally drawn to fighting, which at times led to trouble in his neighborhood. With support and structure from his local 10-20 Club and boxing gym, he found a positive outlet for his energy and began to grow both as a fighter and as an individual.

Sarnoi’s technical skills progressed, and he earned recognition after winning medals at the 2003 US Under-19 Championships and the 2005 US National Golden Gloves Tournament. While gaining experience in the ring, he also maintained a long-term goal of pursuing higher education. His boxing achievements eventually helped secure a scholarship from the US Olympic Committee, allowing him to earn a bachelor’s degree in finance from Northern Michigan University.

After going pro in 2008, Sarnoi built a professional record of 25 wins and 4 losses, with 16 wins coming by knockout. He competed in venues across California and Mexico, gaining fans and earning opportunities to fight for titles. In addition to capturing the WBC Super Featherweight championship in his final bout, he also claimed the WBC Latino Featherweight title in 2018. During his active years, he also represented Laos internationally—competing at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games and the 2022 Asian Games. Alongside his career in the ring, Sarnoi continued to invest in his future by completing a master’s degree in business administration from Azusa Pacific University.

Having grown up in a predominantly Mexican-American neighborhood, Sarnoi developed an early appreciation for cultural diversity and community connection. Fluent in English, Spanish, Thai, and Mandarin, he uses his language skills and lived experience to engage with a broad range of individuals—both in and out of the boxing world.

“I bring a well-rounded approach to the sport—not only as a professional athlete but also as an individual committed to education and service,” Sarnoi comments. “My upbringing in a Lao and Thai family, along with being raised in a Mexican community, has helped me relate to people from different backgrounds and perspectives.”

Whether hosting webinars about the benefits of boxing for youth or offering hands-on mentorship at his local gym, Sarnoi continues to share his story as a way of encouraging others. He draws from his own experiences as a multicultural athlete to guide younger boxers in developing both skill and character. His broader aim is to create more opportunities where sports and service intersect, showing how both can contribute to personal growth and community well-being.

“Boxing taught me a lot about discipline, resilience, and how to channel my energy productively,” Sarnoi has said. “Now, I want to help others find their own path—whether it’s through sport, education, or public service.”

Through these efforts, Sarnoi is working to leave a meaningful legacy that goes beyond championship belts and win-loss records. By emphasizing service, mentorship, and connection, he hopes to continue contributing to the communities that have shaped him—and perhaps inspire others to do the same.
