Derek Ouyang is a music business professional and songwriter with experience spanning the industry’s creative and business sides. Early Career & Songwriting Achievements
Derek began his career as the primary songwriter for Chinese pop star 张钰琪 (Rachel Zhang), signed to Tencent Music Entertainment, China’s largest music company. Together, they co-wrote three EPs during her time at Berklee College of Music, including the acclaimed track “Moonlight,” which earned a spot on the Asian Pop Music Award Top 10 Chart. Their collaborations have reached a broad audience in China, with Rachel performing their music at various festivals nationwide. Recognized for her success on talent shows such as The Coming One and Singer (歌手), Rachel has highlighted Derek’s contributions as an essential part of her creative process.

Pioneering Work in A&R and Marketing
Derek’s introduction to the music business began in high school when he became involved with NetEase Cloud Music, a central streaming platform in China. There, he curated editorial playlists that reached a growing audience, allowing him to develop his skills in music curation and audience engagement.
Derek later gained experience at Atlantic Records, working in both the A&R and Marketing departments. In A&R, he researched unsigned talent, contributed to team discussions, and helped organize information on writers, producers, and publishers. He was also involved in aspects of podcast production for Warner Music Group’s Rock and Roll High School, hosted by Pete Ganbarg.
In the Marketing department, Derek contributed to the success of major campaigns, including coordinating fan-facing activations for Ed Sheeran’s Autumn Variations album. He also developed digital marketing strategies for artists like Alicia Creti, Charlotte Cardin, and Galantis. His ability to bridge creativity and business set him apart as a vital team member.
Current Role at Warner Records
Derek now works at Warner Records, collaborating with some of the most innovative artists in the industry, including Benson Boone, Mac Miller, Rüfüs Du Sol, Nessa Barrett, and Orville Peck. He has played a pivotal role in producing Nessa Barrett’s sophomore album, Aftercare, and Benson Boone’s upcoming release following his global hit “Beautiful Things,” the most-streamed song of 2024. Derek’s contributions have helped shape projects that dominate the charts and earn critical acclaim.
