How many of the boxes or bags that contain our daily purchases end up in the trash? Approximately 90%. The rest is because the packaging remains utilitarian or because it simply becomes a collectible or decorative object.

Environmental pollution continues to grow by leaps and bounds and the industry is gradually becoming aware of the great responsibility; it must ensure less waste and more recycling, which allows the reuse of materials. Therefore, different ways of using ecological packaging have been implemented to leave a less harmful footprint for the planet.

Ana Luisa Yanes is one of those designers who has decided to implement measures to reduce the overproduction of packaging. The Venezuelan graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in brand and packaging design has an impeccable career in important companies such as Southern Telecom and Jon Michael Design in New York City.

Packaging is not only a communications strategy and physical representation of the brand, but also a method of protection for a product, which makes it necessary until it reaches the consumer and then it is automatically discarded. “As a packaging designer, I am very aware of the environmental pollution that packaging creates and how difficult it is to avoid it. I emphasize and research sustainable materials and methods of creating packaging that is better for the environment. Many times, for reasons of cost, accessibility, or lack of knowledge, brands opt for traditional methods instead of looking for more sustainable solutions when making and producing their packaging, so I like to be always aware of the technological advances that are being developed in this field, to be able to offer solutions beyond a beautiful design,” said Yanes.

Ana Luisa also proposes another solution that she is willing to include in her designs. Implementing graphics that instruct the consumer on how to recycle the packaging, since so many materials today are recyclable, but end up being discarded due to lack of education on how to do it. For example, if we do not remove the label from a plastic bottle before placing it in the plastic recycling container, we are contaminating the entire recycling batch. The Venezuelan designer is already creating for important companies worldwide and is one of the young talents that stands out in the industry for her commitment to the environment and her need to create solutions that contribute to the planet.
