From Amazon to Microsoft and Michaels Stores, Zhang has applied his expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing to various industries, driving efficiency and innovation. In this interview, he reflects on his experiences, the lessons learned along the way, and his vision for the future. Interviewer: Xingyu, you’ve worked at some of the biggest tech companies, such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Michaels Stores. How did your journey in software engineering begin, and what led you to focus on AI and cloud computing?

Xingyu Zhang: My journey began during my undergraduate studies at Jilin University in China, where I earned a degree in Software Engineering. I always had a fascination with how technology could solve real-world problems, but it wasn’t until my Master’s program at The George Washington University that I really honed in on AI and cloud computing. During my time there, I saw the potential of AI to transform industries and the ability of cloud technologies to scale these innovations. That’s why I’ve focused my career on them ever since.

Interviewer: Indeed! It’s fascinating how AI and cloud technologies have both advanced in recent years, and your work sits right at the intersection of these innovations. Can you share some learnings you gained, perhaps during your time at Amazon and Michaels Stores?

Xingyu Zhang: Absolutely. My time at both Amazon and Michaels Stores was incredibly formative. At Amazon, I worked on modernizing part of the AWS (Amazon Web Services) platform using Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) technologies. AWS is such a core part of the cloud infrastructure for businesses worldwide, so contributing to its development and modernization made me feel like I was having a real impact on the broader tech landscape. Working at Amazon was an intense learning experience because the scale at which AWS operates is massive. Everything we built had to be efficient, secure, and scalable. This experience reinforced the importance of writing clean, reliable code and thinking about the long-term implications of design decisions.

At Michaels Stores, I had the opportunity to work on a fascinating AI project where we developed a system to automatically assign tax codes to products based on their descriptions. This project showed me how AI could be applied in industries like retail to automate tedious tasks while improving accuracy and reducing human error. It was a great example of how AI can streamline operations in industries that might not traditionally be seen as tech-driven. The impact of such innovations goes beyond just cost savings—it creates new opportunities for job growth, as businesses can focus their resources on more strategic, value-added activities.

Interviewer: You’ve mentioned the use of AI across various industries. Can you expand on how you see AI transforming industries and its contribution to improving efficiency and reducing risks?

Xingyu Zhang: Sure. Actually, during my most recent role at Microsoft, I was part of a team that built an anti-fraud escalation web application. The purpose of this app was to identify suspicious subscriptions and escalate them for further review. The challenge here was to develop an architecture that could handle a large volume of data while ensuring quick and accurate fraud detection. Fraud is a huge problem for businesses because it can destabilize their operations and cause financial loss. By developing tools that help prevent fraud, I feel like I contributed to creating a safer environment for businesses to operate in. It also ties back to the broader mission of AI and technology—to create systems that can identify patterns and risks that humans might miss, all while improving efficiency.

I believe the key to successfully applying AI across different fields is understanding the core business problem first. Returning to my previous role at Michaels Stores, I worked on an AI project that assigned tax codes to products based on their descriptions. It wasn’t just about building a machine learning model but also about understanding how the retail industry operates, the importance of accuracy in tax classification, and the challenges businesses face in managing large inventories. In both cases, understanding the industry needs allowed me to tailor AI solutions that would provide real value.

Interviewer: You’ve successfully integrated AI into so many fields, from cloud computing to retail, fraud detection, and logistics. What advice would you give to other software engineers who want to explore AI-driven industry solutions?

Xingyu Zhang: I’d first say to always start with the industry problem rather than the technology. My second piece of advice is to keep learning. When I first started web development, I didn’t imagine I’d end up working with advanced AI models, but by staying open to learning and embracing new technologies, I was able to expand my skill set and apply AI in meaningful ways. Engineers who want to work with AI should be comfortable with the idea of continual learning and experimentation.

Interviewer: That’s great advice. You’ve accomplished so much, Xingyu, but I’m curious—what are your upcoming goals? Where do you see yourself in the future?

Xingyu Zhang: In the immediate future, I want to explore how AI can be integrated even further into industries like healthcare, finance, and manufacturing to drive greater efficiencies and improvements. In the longer term, I’m very interested in contributing to developing ethical AI practices. I’d like to be involved in shaping how AI can be used to benefit society while also addressing concerns around privacy, fairness, and transparency.

What are the Basic Uses of the SADP Tool?

The SADP tool is an integral part of the Hikvision system. We can’t properly manage its Network Cameras and NVRs without this very efficient tool. Its key uses are shared here.

  • Discover the Devices– It automatically searches and locates cameras and recorders on the same network. It is straightforward to use for batch IP address discovery. Users can detect multiple cameras and their credentials at a time.
  • Configures the Device IP Address– The tool allows users to get the IP address of their respective devices. They can configure, upgrade, and change the device’s IP. They can also manage the subnet mask and gateways through the SADP. 
  • Activate Devices & Reset Passwords– The SADP tool helps in device activation and password resetting. You must have a password reset for the device’s security and safety.
  • Updates Firmware– The tool can update and upgrade the network device. You can update the firmware by going to the firmware tab. It ensures the proper functioning of the Hikivision devices.
  • Manages Overall Health of the Hikvision Devices– It gives all the relevant information regarding the device. Information like the camera or NVR model number, its serial number, the IP address, firmware version, etc., gives the technician or administrator ample knowledge to help the device be healthy.
  • Adjust Network Settings– This adjusts the network settings of the devices without requiring them physically. It makes things hassle-free and organizes cameras and recorders.
  • Enable DHCP– The SADP enables the DHCP on the activated devices. It helps make devices online and fix their IPs.
  • Change the HTTP and Server Port– Though the Hikvision device port is 80, users can customize it for specific uses.
  • Import & Export XML Files to Tech Support and Vice Versa– You can easily exchange the data and upload or download it for updation and upgradation. 

How do you install, set up, and use the Hikvision SADP Tool?

To install the SADP tool, you have to download it. You will get the download link on CCTVDESK. After downloading, you can install the software by pressing the download button. The App is available for Windows and Mac operating systems.

Use of SADP Tool

After the installation, you will set up the tool by running it on your PC. You get the user interface of the SADP tool.

Here, you can use the software in multiple ways. 

Please remember that to find the Hikvision CCTV devices on the SADP Software, the medium network of computers and devices must be the same. So, find all the Hikvision devices on the physical network, even on other subnets.

Activate the IP Camera

The first step is to press the ‘Refresh’ button. When you press it, you get the added devices in the same network. You have to activate the device and create a secure and strong password. 

Select the device you want to activate and then secure it with a powerful password. Once the device is activated, it can be managed and confirmed.

Configure Device IPs and other Features

You can access the device IP and configure it if necessary. You can also select the batch option to perform the same function for multiple devices at once.

To change the IP address, you must select the desired device and input the new IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. Then, press the save button for confirmation.

Modify the Port

The user can modify the device port if required. You can go for the option by selecting the given tab. After the necessary setting, save the changes.

Import/Export Files

You can export and import files, upgrade the firmware, and import or export device data. It is in your hands. You can preserve the data as long as possible.

Firmware Updation or Upgradation

To keep the Hikvision device up to date, we require updating the firmware from time to time. The process is simple.

You can download the firmware update file from the Hikvision official website on your computer. Then, go to the firmware tab to update the device. 

How to Utilize an SADP Tool in the Good Way?

To gain the maximum benefit from this tool, we have to update it regularly.    

We must regularly check the device firmware as outdated software can meet with vulnerabilities.

It is important to reset the password periodically to prevent security breaches. This enhances the overall security of the system.

Manage and maintain an Excel sheet or diary for all the device changes you make via the SADP Tool. It will be handy for any future device management.

How to Avoid Common Problems With Drawer Channels?

A drawer channel, also known as a drawer slide or a drawer runner, is an integral hardware component used in the smooth operation of drawers. It allows you to slide the drawers easily. A drawer channel can be of several types, like under-mount, side-mount, center-mount, roller drawer channel, and ball-bearing drawer channel. A drawer channel comprises two parts – one is attached to the drawer itself, and the other is attached to the frame. It moves along this path so that the drawer can be opened and closed with ease. Though drawer channels are a hidden component and often get overlooked, it is important to maintain them so that the functionality of drawer systems doesn’t get affected.

Drawer channels perform several key functions for hassle-free movement of drawer systems. These let the drawer glide smoothly, thus preventing it from slamming shut. Most importantly, they provide stability to the items stored inside the drawers. They also offer a specific weight-loading capacity so that the items can be stored properly inside the drawer systems. The drawer channels are known to be durable and long-lasting. However, they can often lead to frustration if they are not maintained properly. Before knowing the solutions to avoid common drawer channel problems, it is important to know about the possible problems that can arise in a drawer channel. This is one of the most common problems with drawer channels and this issue is quite inevitable. This often happens in drawer systems that are used frequently. Apart from repetitive usage, the other reason for this problem could be that the drawer channel is made up of low-quality material because of which it wears out way before its lifetime. This leads to uneven movement of drawers, thus breaking down the entire drawer channel system. 

If you want to avoid this problem, you should opt for drawer channels that are made up of high-quality materials often suited for excessive usage. You can choose heavy-duty materials like stainless steel and zinc since they are much more resistant to daily wear and tear. Moreover, always opt for a drawer channel integrated with a soft-closing mechanism so that it prevents the drawer from slamming shut. Always try to distribute the weight of items properly while placing them inside the drawers.

Loud and Unusual Noise

Drawer systems are designed in such a way that they can operate silently. If drawer systems are operating with excessive noise, worn-out parts or a lack of lubrication are likely to be the cause. This can be problematic in quiet spaces such as bedrooms, offices, and home libraries. 

Regularly using silicon-based oil to grease the drawer channel will solve this issue. Regular lubrication will ensure the quiet operation of the drawers. Don’t forget to inspect the drawer systems and their components if you face the issue of excessive noise. Replace the components if they are worn out.

Inconsistent Movement

Sometimes it becomes difficult to control the movement of drawers. This happens because of worn-out drawer channels or improper installation. It will, therefore, glide more smoothly on one side of the drawer than the other. Due to this, the drawer’s normal operation will be impacted and it will become unbalanced. 

This issue can be avoided if you ensure that the drawer channel is installed properly. Always check the installation level and distance of both sides of drawer slides. Don’t forget to lubricate the drawer channels once installed.

Misalignment

The problem of misalignment occurs when drawer channels are not installed properly, or they shift from their place because of loose screws or excessive usage. In this case, it becomes really difficult to control the movement of drawers because while operating, the drawer channels can often go off track or fall from the designated track. This can impact the usage of drawer systems. 

The only way you can avoid this problem is to take preventive measures from the beginning which means following the correct installation process,  inspecting the drawer channel as and when the issue arises, and replacing or upgrading the drawer slides when needed.

Corrosion and Rust
