In a time when people feel barraged with arduous trials, it is uplifting to see people like David Towner, author of Today Is My Favorite Day, who are making earnest efforts to make the world a better place.
For over twenty-two years, David Towner has been a dedicated and devoted pastor in Tampa Bay. In 1990, he received a Master of Arts in Physical Education from California State University, Chico. Six years later, David earned a Master of Divinity in Biblical Languages from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He also studied abroad at Oxford University in England.
In all of David’s endeavors, God has always been by his side, including crossing paths with his wife, Tonya. The couple met at Neighborhood Church in Chico, California. Both of them were leaders in Neighborhood’s thriving college ministry.
While David was competing in track and field and spearheading Fellowship of Christian Athletes on the Chico State campus, he led college Bible studies for the church. On the other hand, Tonya was an aerobic teacher and also taught Bible studies for Neighborhood Church. And after four years, the two organized a Bible study together.
As David began to take an interest in Tonya, he decided to attend one of her aerobic classes. And a couple of months later, they started dating until they eventually tied the knot in 1990. Today, the God-centered duo is proud to have three beautiful daughters and four amazing grandsons.
Being the current senior pastor of the Harbor Church in Odessa, Florida, David has helped make the community a safe, open, transparent, and family-driven space for those looking for peace in their lives. The Harbor Church has become God’s harbor to everyone, especially those who are hurting, stuck, and struggling in the middle of their turbulent paths.
Having experienced some turbulence himself, David knows what it is like to be facing the difficulties of life. In 2013, he was diagnosed with a carcinoid after experiencing an emergency appendectomy. And because cancer had spread, he had to undergo more surgeries to remove the disease.
It was a tough time for David. And to keep his attitude and disposition in check, he kept reminding himself of his mantra: “Today Is My Favorite Day.” During his hospital stays, God revealed six simple truths that helped him continue to keep his faith.
Years later, David wrote a sermon series called Today Is My Favorite Day—inspired by his past experiences. And out of this series, he wrote a book of the same title.
Today Is My Favorite Day is a raw, humorous, and real book that emphasizes six simple truths to help readers develop a positive and hopeful mindset. David incorporates his challenging and comical personal adventures with critical theological concepts and numerous Biblical references to keep the reader engaged.
Using his book, David ran a pilot campaign with people in his church and others around the country. In that event, David witnessed miracles brewing in the lives of those who read the book—people struggling with a variety of health issues developed positive outlooks. At the same time, spouses who lost jobs came closer together.
Although many of the church activities were put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic, David still believes there is hope. Many people have come to purchase the book to help themselves and their families get through the isolation, uncertainties, and financial turmoil of the times.
