Cynthia Howar’s story is one of determination, adaptability, and a deep love for her community. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Cynthia comes from a family of local developers who have been building and managing properties since the 1920s.
This rich heritage laid the foundation for her future success, but her path to becoming a real estate powerhouse was far from conventional.
Before ever setting foot in real estate, Cynthia pursued her passion for law. She earned her J.D. from the prestigious Georgetown University Law School in 1983 and did graduate work at the Ph.D. level in Environmental Psychology at the City University of New York.
Her legal career took her from the courtroom to the Capitol, where she worked on several government regulatory and policy bodies.
A Pivot to Real Estate Excellence
In 2006, Cynthia made a bold move and obtained her realtor’s license in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
Some might have seen this as a risky career shift, but for Cynthia, it was an opportunity to combine her legal expertise, business acumen, and love for her hometown.
Starting from the bottom, Cynthia worked tirelessly to build her reputation. Her hard work and dedication quickly paid off.
From 2015 to 2023, she was consistently ranked among “America’s Best Real Estate Agents” by Real Trends and Trulia and “Washingtonian’s Best Real Estate Agents.” Bethesda Magazine named her a “Top Producer” from 2020 to 2023.
But rankings and awards only tell part of the story. Cynthia’s true success lies in the relationships she builds with her clients.
Take, for example, the seller who initially felt uneasy about Cynthia’s higher listing price. Cynthia took the time to explain her strategy, and within a week, they had a full-price offer.
Or the lifelong friend who trusted Cynthia to sell their property, and she exceeded their expectations at every step, from remodeling to staging to closing.
Expertise, Empathy, and Endless Energy
So, what sets Cynthia apart in the competitive world of real estate?
First and foremost, it’s her unique blend of skills and experiences. With over 30 years of expertise in business, legal, sales, and strategic marketing, plus a decade in healthcare informatics and telemedicine systems, Cynthia brings a multifaceted perspective to every transaction.
But more than her impressive resume, Cynthia’s deep empathy and tireless work ethic truly make her shine.
She understands that buying or selling a home is more than a financial decision. It’s an emotional journey.
That’s why she’s always ready to go the extra mile, whether negotiating a deal right before takeoff on a flight to Paris or closing her biggest deals from a sick bed on Christmas.
Mentors and Lessons Learned
Cynthia’s success didn’t happen in a vacuum. She credits two influential mentors for shaping her early professional life: Sarah Weddington, an attorney for whom she worked, and Arthur Levitt, the former Chairman of the American Stock Exchange.
“They are the reason I went to law school, and both wrote me very nice letters of recommendation,” Cynthia shares.
From Sarah Weddington, Cynthia learned the importance of maintaining grace and dignity in the workplace, even in demanding roles traditionally dominated by men.
Arthur Levitt gave her advice that has stayed with her to this day: “Never write a letter, even to God.”
Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer nervous about making the leap or a seasoned investor looking for your next opportunity, Cynthia Howar is the partner you want.

After all, as Cynthia’s grandfather wisely said, “If you take from the community, you have to give back to the community.”
