NY Weekly’s 10 Businesses in 2021

New York is known for many things—vibrant culture, world-class skyline, and fast-paced environment. With all of its buzzing activities, New York has been recognized as one of the most progressive cities in the United States. It is home to many companies and entrepreneurs that have impacted the landscapes of their respective industries. The New York economy continues to thrive, giving innovative minds a place to set their visions to life and a space for driven individuals who want to achieve great heights. New York has also seen businesses come and go over the years, and it has contributed significantly to the economic advancements of the country as a whole. But with all the doors opening virtually every day in New York, it’s hard to keep track of which ones genuinely rise to the top. Nevertheless, here are our top businesses to watch in 2021:

1. Ava Kaufman

Ava’s Heart is a California-based non-profit organization that provides critically needed assistance that insurance does not cover to transplant patients who are unable to access or afford it. It was founded by Ava Babbin Kaufman, who herself is a heart transplant recipient.

Core to these services is providing the mandated pre- and post-transplanting housing. In addition to ancillary supportive services to temporary housing near the transplant center, access to lifesaving transplants becomes not only a medical issue but also one of healthcare inequity.

Ava’s Heart is committed to addressing and reducing this disparity to save the lives of those in need of transplant. It is time to create systemic change that allows for increased access to transplant services. Also integral to their mission is to assist donor families with burial expenses and to promote organ donation. Without the donor, there is no story.
