Neal Hively: A Life Dedicated to History, Faith, and Literature

Neal Hively is a man of many talents and passions whose work has made a meaningful impact on multiple fields. As a historian, theologian, and author, his dedication to preserving the past, guiding communities in faith, and exploring the boundless world of literature has spanned decades. From his extensive research on Pennsylvania’s colonial land records to his recent venture into fiction writing, Hively’s contributions have been widely recognized, shaping both academic and religious communities.

Neal Hively’s journey appears to have been deeply rooted in faith and intellectual curiosity. His early years seem to have been influenced by his grandfather, Rev. Calvin Crawford Mizener, who baptized him at his church in Mifflinburg, PA, on November 11, 1950. Growing up in a devout Lutheran family, Hively reportedly found his calling in the ministry from a young age.

Hively’s academic journey led him to the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg in the early 1970s, where he pursued theological studies. His passion for ministry and scholarship appears to have been evident early on, as he became involved in both church activities and historical research. His theological training also granted him a draft exemption during the Vietnam War, as he was classified under II-D status, reserved for those preparing for ordained ministry. By 1970, he was officially enrolled at the seminary and pre-certified for ordination by the Central Pennsylvania Synod of the Lutheran Church in America.

After completing his seminary studies, Hively embarked on his pastoral career, interviewing at several parishes before accepting his first official Call at the Upper Bermudian Lutheran Parish in Gardners, Pennsylvania. This two-point parish included Mt. Zion in Cumberland County and Upper Bermudian in Adams County. His tenure at various congregations throughout Pennsylvania helped establish his reputation as a dedicated and effective leader.

Hively’s commitment to strengthening church communities was acknowledged in 1991 when he received the Excellence in Evangelism Award from the Lower Susquehanna Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), an honor that reflected his efforts in outreach and ministry development. Over the years, he continued to serve congregations, including interim positions at The Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Cocoa Beach, Florida, and Christ the King Lutheran Church in Sebastian, Florida, between 2020 and 2023.

Even in retirement, Hively reportedly remains actively engaged in church life, singing in the adult choir alongside his brother, Dr. Lee Mizener Hively, PhD. He also continues to preach occasionally, stepping in for local clergy when needed.

While Hively’s impact in the religious sphere is notable, his work as a historian and researcher is also highly regarded. His passion for historical research led him to become a respected authority on Pennsylvania’s colonial land records.

His most notable work, the Original Pennsylvania Land Records Series, is a 20-volume collection that meticulously documents land transactions in York and Adams counties. This research covers over 6,000 properties and 830,000 acres, making it a valuable resource for historians, genealogists, and land surveyors. Recognizing the importance of his work, the York County History Center and the Adams County Historical Society officially acquired his research in 2017, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

In 2002, the York County Genealogical Society awarded Hively its highest honor, the Dr. Henry J. Young Award, in acknowledgment of his extensive research. His contributions to historical literature have also included numerous articles, such as Settlement West of the Susquehanna River prior to 1741, which was the lead article in the Journal of York County Heritage in September 2017. His research on colonial land holdings has become an important reference in the field, often cited by historians and researchers.

Literary Contributions and Fiction Writing

Beyond historical and religious writing, Hively has explored the world of fiction. In mid-2023, he began working on VOICEs of Hope, a faith-based science fiction fantasy novel. This new creative endeavor marked a departure from his previous works, but it was one that he embraced with enthusiasm. By March 2024, he had partnered with American Real Publishing for cover design and editing, and after extensive revisions, the book is expected to be released on Amazon Kindle on February 13, 2025.

Reflecting on the challenges of fiction writing, Hively remarked, “Regardless of how it’s received, I’m gratified that the process is over.” His ability to transition from rigorous historical research to imaginative storytelling demonstrates his versatility as a writer.

Neal Hively’s legacy reflects dedication, scholarship, and service. Whether through his ministerial work, historical research, or fiction writing, he has continuously sought to educate, inspire, and preserve knowledge. His meticulous documentation of Pennsylvania’s colonial history has provided a useful resource for future generations, while his commitment to the church has supported faith communities across multiple states.

Even in retirement, Hively continues to participate in intellectual and spiritual pursuits. His contributions to history, theology, and literature may well continue to influence scholars, churchgoers, and readers for years to come. From the pulpit to the archives and now to the pages of a novel, his journey stands as an example of a life well-lived in service of faith, history, and creativity.
