Award-winning interior designer Lucinda Loya has always set exceptionally high standards when reimagining and seamlessly integrating space. In her latest project in New York, she has subtly ascended those creative challenges.
Houston-based Lucinda fused art, history, nature, and modern design in her ‘Enchanted Roots’ project, part of her reinterpretation of a Grand Staircase and powder room at an Upper East Side townhouse on 125 East 65th Street.
Refined Grandeur
The former residence of many early 20th-century city high-fliers, including publishing magnate Henry Luce, is the focus of the 49th annual Kips Bay New York Show House 2024. It is a prestigious event that challenges designers to transform a luxury home into a stunning exhibition of fine furnishings, art, and technology while also doubling as the nation’s most highly awaited design event of the year.
“Our goal was to create spaces that tell stories while supporting the incredible mission of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club,” reflected Lucinda, who heads up Lucinda Loya Interiors. “Our design transports visitors into a realm of refined grandeur.”
With 30 years of experience and as a leading figure in the interior design world, Lucinda’s unmistakable aesthetic and imaginative approach have been applied to homes and private jets, hotels, yachts, commercial spaces, and hit TV shows.
Transcending Sophistication
The Grand Staircase and powder room at the Kips Bay home received Lucinda and her team’s “eclectic high-end style,” aiming to elevate the spirit and captivate the senses in an immersive experience.
On the Grand Staircase, visitors will encounter a stunning “Ripped” rug from LLI’s upcoming 2025 collection with The Rug Company. The staircase’s backdrop is adorned with custom wallpaper in collaboration with Flavor Paper, featuring a collage of 19th-century etchings that create a unified perspective.
As visitors ascend the staircase, they are greeted by a tranquil waterfall, leading to the landing adorned with large-scale custom cornices and alpaca drapery crafted by The Shade Store using Sandra Jordan’s luxurious fabrics.
LLI’s highly detailed design extends to the main powder room on the second floor dressed in Loya’s “Rift” wallpaper, a new design in collaboration with Flavor Paper, inspired by runway fashion and Lucinda’s vision of organic futurism.
A custom-designed vanity by Cosentino pairs seamlessly with Kohler fixtures. Vaughan pendants, luxurious accessories, and custom monogrammed towels by E. Braun & Co. New York add a touch of refinement and sophistication.
Innovation to the Fore
Scott Eaton’s Perpetual Now! video art offers a delightful surprise, blending seamlessly with Melt Mirrors by Bower Studio and a unique rug installation by Stark Carpet. Innovative lighting is a hallmark of LLI’s design, evident in the Fiddlehead fixtures by Roll and Hill that mirror the delicate unfurling of fern leaves.
The Grand Aperture by Allied Makers echoes the graceful passage of light and the sun’s shape, enhancing the space’s ambiance. Look closely and notice unparalleled attention to detail in every custom piece, from the black piping repeated on the bathroom vanity, alpaca drapery, and bench to the harmonious repetition of shapes and organic patterns on the rug, lighting, and art.
LLI’s design has transformed these spaces into modern masterpieces, endeavoring to showcase a knack for blending contemporary design with the building’s historical setting.
Masterful Visionary
Visitors to the Show House, open to the public until May 28, will take away how the most ordinary part of a house, the staircase, can be turned into a salubrious celebration of art in the moment.
Lucinda’s innovative approach offers dramatic contradictions of texture, pattern, and color, cleverly paired with fine art, accessories, and antiques. She is able to weave a poetic sense of character and individuality through every space. “Our overarching aim is to craft soulful interiors that stand the test of time and bring the client’s vision alive in front of their eyes,” she added.
LLI’s project at Kips Bay further solidifies its reputation for creativity and excellence. The team is currently turning its undoubted design prowess to several projects, including a villa in Cabo San Lucas, an expansive flat in the heart of NYC in Central Park Tower and a home in the Hamptons. Lucinda is also developing multiple licensed collections with top-tier brands in the industry.
Lucinda is also a dedicated philanthropist, with her husband, prominent Houston businessman Javier Loya, who helps empower communities and support various causes. She has contributed both hands-on and advisory support and notable fundraising to numerous non-profit organizations ranging from child advocacy to education and the arts.
