There’s a version of you that is achieving everything they are capable of. The problem is, most people aren’t living that version. They are living a shadow self of their full potential. Which is your reality?
Entrepreneur and powerlifter Jodie Cook believes you can win big, and in more than one aspect of your life. As someone who has built and sold a marketing agency, competed for Great Britain in powerlifting, deadlifted over triple her bodyweight, written twenty books and featured on the Forbes 30 under 30 list, Jodie is testing her theory and sharing the lessons in her free training, what are you capable of?
“Most of us are so far in our comfort zones we don’t even realise it,” she said, “but amazing things, including your dream life, are just beyond its boundaries.” Jodie shares four ways you can do and achieve more.
- Do less
“It sounds counterintuitive, but in order to do more we have to do less first,” Jodie said, before recommending an exercise she calls stop, start, less, more, in which you audit your life and write down what you will stop and start doing, do more and less of. “Commitments you don’t enjoy, obligations you don’t want to be part of, habits that aren’t serving you. Identify what to do less of and what to stop doing to clear space for a new you.” Subtraction is essential before addition can happen.
- Find the courage
“Anything is possible. But in order to act like it is, you need to believe it’s true,” said Jodie, who advised you complete this simple exercise to find the courage to pursue your dreams in a new way. “Write your win list.” This list should be a list of everything you ever achieved that you thought was impossible. “Perhaps this includes an award you won, a project you completed, a role you secured, some breakthrough you had. Write them all down. Next, write down what kind of person you had to be to achieve those things. What characteristics you had to hold, what actions you had to take.” Use this list as a reminder that you can secure those feats. You are capable of more.
- Seek inspiration
“There are plenty of people who will tell you that you can’t do something. Who will convince you to play small and give up on your dreams.” But Jodie wants you to hear from those who will inspire you, because they are making things happen for themselves. “Find role models. Find examples of people doing incredible things, get familiar with them and use them as your inspiration.” Read their books, follow them on social media, listen to their podcasts. “The more you understand how they achieved what they did, the more you will believe that similar things are possible for you.”
- Challenge yourself
Now is where the groundwork combines. “You’ve cleared the space, established that you are capable of big things and found the inspiration to propel you forward. Now it’s time to challenge yourself.” Jodie advised you set yourself a challenge of seeing what is possible, during the next thirty days. “Within the next month, play the capability game. See what you are capable of by setting bigger goals, asking bigger questions, putting yourself forward for more.” You could take the big leap you’ve been considering for a while, you could finally cut the ties that are holding you back. “Seeing this as a game means you can test and experiment with no fear.”
