“When I design a product, it’s like building a jigsaw puzzle. I like a little irregularity, a break in symmetry. This is who I am, and this is what reflects in what I do.” says Puja Shah, reflecting on her journey of 20 years, from studying jewellery design at FIT, New York and working at Brooklyn Museum and Metropolitan Museum in New York to creating an artisanal fine jewellery brand. “Like a black dress or a crisp white shirt that never fails, Moi pieces are extremely versatile- you can wear them casually, to a night out, or even to a gala. They will always work!” she adds.
Puja’s design process unfolds like a microcosm of her life, drawing inspiration from the 19th and 20th centuries, its vast commissions of art of all types, from exquisite textiles to jewellery to furniture to household artefacts, using materials and techniques inherent to India but also influenced in design by Persian, European and other Asian cultures. Her designs are deeply rooted in craft and embrace the finest elements of both past and present.
As business partners, Puja and Kunal are the perfect yin and yang: she is a designer who thinks like an artist, while he is an engineer who loves design. They are a classic left-brain right-brain combination with Puja driving design and Kunal driving digital and business. Every piece of jewellery at Moi is designed by Puja herself and handcrafted by a dedicated cluster of highly skilled artisans in workshops across the country. The result is a collection of timeless masterpieces that exude grace and sophistication, each a testament to the brand’s commitment to excellence, a genuine emblem of luxury sought by those who value meaningful and tasteful luxury.
