Philadelphia, PA – The On the Critical Point art exhibit at the Penn Museum brought together visionary artists worldwide, featuring celebrated sculptor Gong Cheng among its distinguished participants. Organized by VSDesign in collaboration with DesignPhiladelphia and ALT Alliance, the exhibit showcased innovative works that reflect humanity’s evolving relationship with tradition and technology.
Gong Cheng, a sculptor renowned for his ability to merge ancient Chinese aesthetics with modern sensibilities, captivated audiences with his work “Water Drops on Peach Blossoms.” The piece, rich with poetic nostalgia and cultural depth, exemplifies Cheng’s signature style of blending classical themes with contemporary techniques.
Water Drops on Peach Blossoms” (72 x 65 x 38 cm, Resin and Metal): This sculpture evokes the idyllic beauty of traditional Chinese countryside life, drawing from classical poetry and painting to create a sense of serene nostalgia. The flowing design, paired with subtle yet intricate details, reflects Cheng’s mastery of composition and material innovation. Themes of love, tranquility, and the universal longing for a simpler life resonate deeply in this piece, which serves as a bridge between historical aesthetics and modern emotional landscapes.

Gong’s career spans over a decade of groundbreaking achievements in sculpture and design. As a former concept designer for major films like The Wandering Earth, Cheng demonstrated his ability to bring imaginative worlds to life. His entrepreneurial success with the “Jimei Palace” brand has positioned him as a leader in the collectible figurines industry, known for its innovative adaptations of traditional art for a global audience of over 30 countries. In addition, he’s the Chairman of Shenzhen Xiongxiong Society Culture Technology Co., Ltd. His collaborations with internationally recognized brands like Marvel, Tencent, and Disney invited him to collaborate on the 100th Anniversary, which has further solidified his reputation as a pioneer in merging traditional craftsmanship with modern storytelling.
Gong Cheng’s participation in On the Critical Point is particularly significant, given his impressive credentials. He currently serves as the Guest Professor at Peking University’s Boya Advanced Think Tank and at the Hong Kong Academy of Humanities and Natural Sciences. Additionally, he is a member of the China Arts and Crafts Society and the China Building Decoration Association, where he contributes to industry advancements through his expertise.
Throughout his illustrious career, Gong Cheng has received numerous prestigious awards. Notably, he was awarded the 2024 Red Dot Best of the Best Award, one of the design world’s most esteemed honors. In 2022, he earned the Red Dot Concept Design Award, further cementing his reputation as an innovative artist. Gong has also received the Gold Award at the 2023 “Shengong Cup” in China and the Creative Gold Award at the 2023 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Crafts Competition, highlighting his contributions to art and design innovation.
Cheng’s dedication to innovation is evident in his use of new materials and patented processes, enabling him to push traditional sculptures’ boundaries. His articles “The Development of New Craftsmanship in the Z-Generation” and “Innovative Applications of Ceramics and Sculpture in the New Consumer Era” offer insights into the evolving relationship between traditional art forms and modern consumer trends. Additionally, he holds a patent for “A Burr Removal Positioning Device and Its Method of Use” (Patent No. 2020100923125), demonstrating his commitment to innovation and the practical application of artistic techniques.
For Gong Cheng, art is a visual medium and a cultural dialogue connecting the past with the present. He believes that art must continuously evolve, integrating traditional techniques with innovative practices to meet the emotional and aesthetic demands of modern audiences. His sculpture “Ruzi Niu” was acquired by the Shanxi Museum, a first-class national museum in China, and has earned widespread acclaim across both domestic and international platforms. His works, often inspired by Chinese poetry and painting, reflect his commitment to preserving cultural heritage while making it relevant to younger generations.

The Penn Museum, with its rich history and cultural significance, provided an ideal venue for Cheng’s exploration of themes like nostalgia, identity, and innovation. Spanning over 300,000 square feet and welcoming more than 180,000 visitors annually, the museum offered a fitting context for Cheng’s contribution to the exhibit.
