Experiencing job loss can be a catalyst for significant personal and professional growth. Many individuals have found themselves at a crossroads, only to discover new paths leading to greater success. The initial shock and uncertainty often fuel deep introspection and creativity, prompting them to pursue passions or start new ventures. They turn setbacks into opportunities by leveraging their skills and learning new ones. Their stories underscore the power of resilience and adaptability, demonstrating that job loss, though daunting, can ultimately lead to fulfilling and prosperous new beginnings. These journeys inspire others to embrace change and pursue their dreams.
One such journey is that of Deji Daramola, Founder of Narrowgate Group, an entrepreneur and real estate investor who transformed a challenging job loss situation into a successful career in the property industry. With a newborn son to care for and a supportive wife, Deji decided to take matters into his own hands. In 2016, after unexpectedly losing his job, Deji decided to venture into real estate, leveraging his severance pay to invest in a rundown property. “I’ve always wanted to build a property empire and didn’t know how or where to start. I decided to start a property management company called Eminent Estates, which began on the dining table of my one-bedroom flat. I started managing and letting properties for landlords in the area and in return charged a fee for doing this,” says Deji. However, he soon realized this approach would not lead to the rapid growth he envisioned for his business.
Determined to accelerate his progress, Deji turned to alternative property strategies. He immersed himself in learning about Rent to Rent, a model where one leases a property for a fixed period and then sublets it for growth. Armed with newfound knowledge and unwavering determination, Deji implemented the Rent to Rent strategy, offering certain rent to property owners in exchange for managing their properties as Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) or serviced accommodation. This strategic pivot proved to be a game-changer, propelling his business to unprecedented heights.

Today, Deji’s property management business is a testament to his entrepreneurial understanding and dedication. Garnering multiple awards and earning the distinction of being the largest Rent-to-rent operator in the Bedfordshire area, Deji’s success is a testament to his commitment to excellence and innovation. Moreover, his emphasis on community involvement and going the extra mile for his clients sets his company apart in the competitive property market.
In addition to his property management endeavors, Deji now offers a portfolio-building service for busy professionals seeking to enter the property market. His firsthand experience navigating the complexities of property investment equips him with unique insights to guide clients on their journey to building wealth through real estate.
Reflecting on his journey, Deji attributes his success to perseverance and the willingness to embrace challenges head-on. Despite facing numerous rejections and setbacks, he remained undeterred, viewing each “No” as an opportunity to learn and grow. “No has always been the biggest challenge I faced. Starting with no track record is always challenging. I took every ‘No’ as a stepping stone to the next level until I found someone willing to give me a chance. Some of the people who gave me a chance are now business partners or use my company’s portfolio-building service,” shares Deji.
From the depths of job loss to the pinnacle of property success, Deji Daramola’s story serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere. Through determination, innovation, and a commitment to excellence, he has not only built a thriving business but also a legacy of resilience and achievement in the property industry. As he continues to expand his portfolio and impact within the community, Deji remains a shining example of the transformative power of perseverance and passion.
