Every business adheres to a business process which in general could be deemed as ‘a chain of events’ and an automobile workshop is no exception. A general car workshop is unlike authorized service centers given the fact that authorized service centers offer specific services to specific car models that are still under the manufacturer’s warranty whereas a general auto workshop deals with a wide range of different car models, both old and new which renders the business model of general auto workshop much more complex and varied compared to authorized service centers.
A general car workshop owner or the management of the workshop deals with suppliers of spare parts of different car brands and some workshops even resort to tying their workshop business with other workshops to cope with the volume of cars and also in order to share expensive equipment.
Most general workshops are independently owned and most do not have a ‘work process’ strategy which causes redundancies and wastage due to ineffective processes as almost everything is ‘played by ear’ or ‘first come – first serve basis’ which limits a workshop’s capacity to do more in less time.
This article examines possible strategies that could be applied within the context of a general car workshop towards optimizing workshop processes.
A workshop generally receives a car from a vehicle owner who normally drives into a workshop and explains the issues as how he perceives it, the mechanic listens and makes an assessment and generally makes a guess of what is wrong with the car based on his experience and provides the vehicle owner with a ‘ballpark’ figure of how much it will cost on average.
This is all good for simple or superficial issues with cars, however when problems are complex, the mechanic will inform the vehicle owner that he will need to troubleshoot in order to identify the root of the problem before he is able to provide an estimate. This could be overcome by the mechanic by simply downloading the car workshop manual, otherwise also known as the car factory service, from the manufacturer’s website service portal after entering the VIN number, or if unavailable, there are dozens of third-party publisher websites online that offer these manuals for a fairly small fee.
These repair manuals for workshops or independent mechanics are documents compiled and prepared by professional automobile engineers that provide complete details about a car according to make and model, in other words – blueprint of the car that they are required to fix. When a vehicle owner brings his or her vehicle due to issues, all the mechanic has to do is refer to these manuals that also contain information of common problems related to the car and the steps that the mechanic needs to take and the list of spare parts that will be required for the mechanic to fix it.
Based on the info in the manual the mechanic or workshop owner would also be able to determine the cost of repair more accurately and provide the customer with a more accurate approximation of the cost which in turn enables the customer to make a decision on the repair.
This also saves the mechanic from spending hours trying to find the problem which saves the workshop’s time.
