New York has acted like a beacon for dreamers for centuries
Not everyone can deal with New York City. Millions of people have been attracted to the city that never sleeps over the years, hoping for the chance to make their dreams become a reality. It doesn’t always work out – but it can be an excellent place for the fortunate.
The COVID pandemic saw many people leave the city – some of them have not come back. But NYC is still a place where people can find themselves. It doesn’t have to be in the stock markets or the all-new New York sports betting industry – but some dream jobs are best found in what outsiders still call the Big Apple.
The first thing to realize when you move to New York City is that it means absolutely nothing that you were the best in what you do back home. Everyone else is moving with the same deal and looking to make it big in one of the biggest cities in the world. So the odds are instantly against you.
That means that you will need to prove yourself against some talented people. But it also means that if you can get the break that you need, you have the opportunity to become the best in the world. Of course, New York City is the epicenter of just about everything.
So, how do you get that dream job? Good old-fashioned luck plays a significant part, of course. But there are things that you can do to give yourself a better chance of landing gainful – and fulfilling – employment.
The first thing to realize is that you may have to widen your horizons. Back in the day, no one wanted to cross a bridge or take a tunnel out of Manhattan when they pitched up looking for fame and fortune in New York. Now newcomers want to live and work in the trendiest Brooklyn neighborhoods. But the truth is that you will probably not be able to afford your dreams immediately.
Learn about other neighborhoods, communities and even boroughs. The New York City transport system may be justifiably criticized regularly. Still, it does cover just about every inch of the city (unless you want to take the subway on Staten Island). Figuring out a reasonable commute could be crucial for anyone wanting to work in one of the more desirable parts of town because the reality is that your living space will probably not be in the exact location.
Manage your expectations – you will probably not be able to afford your dream location
Flexible thinking can also be a good idea when you are initially trying to find your way. For example, you may have always had your heart set on being a restaurant critic in Manhattan. But it is reasonably possible that you will not be able to land that gig immediately. Work around your desired subject and devote spare time to working on your dreams. You may find that the job you get is pretty good – and getting paid for something related to your dream is better than nothing.
There is also always remote work to consider. This area of employment has grown in the last few years, and more companies and businesses are happy to allow employees to work this way now. It may go against the idea of a ‘dream job in New York to not work in the city – but it might depend on which part of the job is the dream. If it is your actual work, then just doing it for a New York-based company could be the answer.
The last few years have shown us that absolutely nothing will stop people from wanting to come to the city to fulfill their dreams. The main trait needed will – and always will be – determination. If you have that, then you might have a chance.
