Growing up in Haiti, Mercedes developed a deep appreciation for the art of cooking as she watched her family’s domestic chef make authentic Haitian dishes. From an early age, she immersed herself in the kitchen, captivated by the aromas and techniques that have now defined her culinary career.
In 1976, Mercedes relocated to the United States, where she took on the role of family chef, inspired by her mother’s sacrifices to provide for their household. It was during this time that her passion for cooking began, and she discovered the joy of sharing her culinary creations with loved ones.
After years of experimenting with various ingredients, Mercedes has answered the pleas of family and friends by penning her long-awaited cookbook. “With a Dash of Pikliz” is an authentic Haitian cookbook full of secret recipes, lovingly curated over decades of culinary exploration.

With the assistance of her daughters and her publisher, Mercedes went on the journey of documenting her culinary experience. Over the past three years, she recorded her recipes, ensuring that each dish captured the essence of Haitian cuisine.
