Xuemeng Zhang is a visual artist with a unique vision. Her work explores the relationship between the mind and the eye, delving into the depths of visual perception to create thought-provoking works of art. Her latest exhibition, “Other Rooms,” on view from March 15th to March 26th, 2023, at :iidrr Gallery in New York City, is a feast for the imagination.
Zhang’s work has been displayed internationally in venues such as Arte Laguna Prize Arsenale Nord in Venice, Italy, and Untitled Art in Miami Beach, Florida. Her unique perspective has been featured in notable publications, including F-Stop Magazine and Al-Tiba9 Contemporary Art Magazine.
In “Other Rooms,” Zhang reconstructs and visualizes the architecture of the mind using photographs as raw material. Her work challenges the viewer’s perception by focusing on the tension between the unpredictability of imagined spaces and the certainty of photographic images. By building spaces that do not yet exist physically, Zhang’s work acknowledges feelings of uneasiness and envisions how one might live in this built world.
The exhibition features work from one of her notable projects, which shares its name with the exhibition. “Other Rooms” is a photographic project on the reconstruction of imaginary spaces. Zhang’s use of geometrical and irregular shapes to visualize the structuring of imagined spaces questions how these spaces form and function, and how idiosyncratic perception influences and shapes the way we make sense of the world.
