Reimagining Boundaries: Meihe Wu’s 3D Storytelling

3D art brings virtuality into reality, recreating history into the present. The combination of technology and aesthetics echoes the spirit of this era. Meihe Wu, utilizing her delicate sensibilities and her knowledge of sculpture, light, and shadow, shares with us her philosophy of 3D industrialization.

Meihe anticipates the post production of several inspiring films. For instance, “Brown With Blue” won the 2020 Atlanta Underground Film Festival, and in 2022, “The Bugs and the Slugs” premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival. Each film has its own unique story. For Meihe, every 3D creation is more than just a visual representation; it is a narrative waiting to be unveiled. She believes that by skillfully merging technology and storytelling, 3D art possesses the ability to evoke deep emotions and forge connections with audiences on a deep and emotional level.

Creating a 3D character involves meticulously crafting elements such as hair, skin, and muscles, each reacting uniquely to varying lighting conditions, resulting in diverse light and color transformations. For example, one of the primary focuses is meticulously simulating the interaction of hair with different lighting scenarios; achieving the realistic portrayal of hair under clear skies marks one iteration, while another iteration entails crafting the nuances of hair under dusk or nighttime lighting conditions. Subsequently, simulating the appearance of wet hair during rainy weather presents yet another challenge… Throughout these iterations, achieving realism in the 3D character’s appearance demands plenty of attention to detail.

“When I entered the 3D field, my passion for sculpture remained strong,”Meihe added. “For example, I greatly admire a particular teacher who exudes a fine art sensibility in his work. When you observe different styles of painting, you can feel the nuances. Realism may give you a sense of precision akin to scanning, while painting evokes a variety of brushstrokes. What I appreciate is the freedom and wildness in their expression; their understanding of lines varies. Some artists create adorable paintings, while others convey a sense of dignity. This same principle applies to sculpting.

As a highly observant artist, Meihe endeavors to infuse nature into her 3D art, drawing inspiration from various sources. Whether it’s watching movies, reading books, visiting exhibitions, exploring the streets, or hearing friends’ stories, she finds inspiration everywhere. She aims to create more expressive works in the future. When Meihe sees someone depict a calm water surface in a painting, she contemplates how to render it with lighting in her 3D art. For conveying tranquility, she might use deep blue lighting on the water surface combined with subtle orange hues. Meihe also observes the interplay of outdoor and indoor lighting in photographs, finding inspiration in the real world and then exaggerating it with her own ideas in the virtual realm. For example, she envisions scenarios like placing a bed on a calm water surface with clouds hovering above, or constructing a glass house with plants atop the water. Meihe aspires to create effects like a falling water droplet.
