From May 16 to 19, the second Hong Kong International Cultural and Creative Expo (Art Hong Kong EXPO) showcased the dynamic spirit of Asia’s global city and the convergence of diverse world cultures at the AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong. The event highlighted a vibrant celebration of culture and creativity, captivating the international metropolis. The Expo featured an impressive array of cultural and artistic forms, from traditional Chinese paintings, bronzes, ceramics, and other crafts like antiques, gold and silverware, and jade to modern art, photography, embroidery, and installation art. These exhibits demonstrated the brilliance and diversity of art, allowing visitors to appreciate the exquisite skills of traditional crafts while experiencing the innovation and avant-garde of contemporary art.
The Expo’s success was ensured by significant support and assistance from numerous organizations. Key contributors included the Hong Kong International Cultural and Creative Expo Organizing Committee, the Greater China Africa Chamber of Commerce, Art Valley, Double Delight DD, and Yunfeng Gallery. The Hong Kong Tourism Board, the Maritime Silk Road Association, and several consulates in Hong Kong also provided additional support. Notable supporters included the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the Maritime Silk Road Association, the Honorary Consulate of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Consulate General of Qatar, the Consulate General of the Republic of South Africa, the Consulate General of Kazakhstan, the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Senegal, and the Consulate General of the Russian Federation. Their involvement underscored the vital role of cultural exchange and cooperation, creating a strong foundation for the event’s success.
This year’s Expo featured a diverse group of outstanding artists who brought a range of styles and techniques to the event, enriching it with their creativity and passion. Wenxin Fu’s screendance “In Between” stood out, depicting two dancers who cradle ice within their bodies and interact with each other. This piece explores the philosophical symbolism of “water” in Chinese culture, delving into human emotions such as interconnectedness, anguish, and reconciliation. Hengtian Zhou’s “Still Walking” addressed the conflicts in Asian societies, using animation, photography, and moving images to portray the relationships between left-behind children and their grandparents, a representative family dynamic in East Asia.
Other notable works included Peiyao (Heather) Tang’s “When a Circle Starts to Dream,” Yuan Zhuang’s “Huntington Dreams,” Xiaosu Jing’s “COVID-19 CT Images,” and Yixu Liu’s “Women for Sale 2022.” These overseas Chinese artists brought vibrancy and excitement to the Expo with their unique perspectives and artistic expressions.
The Hong Kong Cultural Expo has emerged as a crucial platform that connects cultures from around the globe as the cultural and creative industries continue to grow and evolve. Through events like this, cultural arts exchange and cooperation are promoted, injecting new vitality and momentum into the cultural industry of Hong Kong and its neighboring regions. In the auction segment, notable sales included Yuan Zhuang’s “Huntington Dream,” which fetched HKD 35,000, and Xiaosu Jing’s “COVID-19 CT Images,” which was successfully auctioned for HKD 11,000. These sales highlighted the unique artistic styles and market value of the works presented.
With the successful hosting of the Expo, the Hong Kong cultural community is optimistic about the future of the art field.
