The dynamic Italian-born curator and writer Ginevra de Blasio is swiftly making her mark in the international art scene with her innovative curatorial projects and insightful academic contributions. With a rich background steeped in Renaissance art and culture history, de Blasio has transitioned her early inspirations into a flourishing career in New York City, illuminating the contemporary art world with her visionary exhibitions and scholarly pursuits.
Born and raised in the culturally vibrant city of Rome, Italy, Ginevra de Blasio’s love for art was not just a product of her surroundings, but also a result of her artist grandmother’s influence. This early exposure to the majesty of Rome’s historical art, coupled with her unique perspective, shaped her journey to the University of Exeter, England, where she completed her BA in Art History and Visual Culture in 2021. She further honed her skills by pursuing an MA in Visual Arts Administration at New York University, graduating in 2023.
Throughout her academic career, de Blasio engaged in extensive curatorial and work experiences with prestigious institutions such as The Drawing Center, Performa, Fondazione Corsini, and 99 Canal. Currently, she serves as an assistant to the partners at Paula Cooper Gallery and as a research assistant to Adam Weinberg, Director Emeritus of the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Ginevra de Blasio took the helm in curating the notable exhibition, ‘Under a White Sky,’ at Forte Stella in Porto Ercole, organized by the Orto Botanico Corsini Monte Argentario. The exhibition, which received support from Toscanaincontemporanea and the Tuscany Region, with the patronage of the Municipality of Monte Argentario, is a testament to her innovative approach to integrating contemporary art within historical contexts. This exhibition, the first of its kind at Forte Stella, is a testament to her leadership and creative abilities.
“Under a White Sky” features works by contemporary artists who explore themes of nature, technology, and identity against Forte Stella’s striking architecture. This exhibition brings modern art into dialogue with historical settings and revitalizes the local cultural landscape, attracting art lovers from across the globe.
When asked about her inclination for art, de Blasio reflects on her upbringing in Rome, which she describes as living in a “living, urban museum.” This experience instilled in her a deep appreciation for art that continued to evolve during her studies abroad. “Being away from Rome made me realize the immense privilege I had,” de Blasio states, emphasizing how this realization has fueled her passion for art history and curation.
De Blasio’s favorite creative area is curating, which she believes offers the closest engagement with art next to creating it. “Curating and writing are conduits through which I can express and highlight the themes and ideas that resonate deeply with me,” she explains. Her work aims to provide a platform for underrepresented voices and to explore themes that challenge and expand the conventional boundaries of art and culture.
Looking ahead, Ginevra de Blasio is not resting on her laurels. She is already deeply involved in the upcoming iteration of the ‘Under a White Sky’ series, set to take place this summer. She will co-curate and serve on the jury, further solidifying her role as a leading figure in contemporary art curation. Additionally, de Blasio is committed to contributing to scholarly research in art history and visual culture, aiming to bridge the gap between historical art practices and contemporary interpretations.
Ginevra de Blasio represents a fresh and insightful art curation and scholarship voice. With a background deeply rooted in one of the world’s historic cities and a progressive approach to contemporary art, she is poised to continue making significant impacts in the art world, fostering dialogues and understanding across cultures and generations.
